How intensely absorbing this performance was. I did not feel the time going by . . . the translation of the reference photo into the delicate strokes of pencil imagery was magical, but like the most strict and patient magical expertise in the world. Good magic takes time. I almost held my breath watching that branch appear, like it was being meticulously conjured, one tissue-light layer at the end.

Beautiful work Bec, I am a beginner and certainly no expert but I think the drawing pencils are waxed based and polychromos are oil based and that’s why they won’t work together.
@brusheswithbec25 күн бұрын
Yes that's correct. They do still work together but consideration needs to be taken into how they are used together for best results.

I am yearning toward these pencils, but I want to know there's a really good reason to add them. I love your videos, commentary and art work both, and I have very greatly enjoyed and learned from checking out the Derwent pencil performance the way you have rolled it out. Subscribing. Thanks!

Hi Bec! I was scouring KZfaq for tips as I'm trying to get started in coloured pencil art and stumbled upon this really useful video. Then I spotted your lovely Crimson Chat piece I recall seeing ages ago, I realised it was the same Bec I birded with a few times years ago! Thanks so much for the content, I'm sure I'll find it all very useful as I get started in all of this! Love your art!!!

Lovely to hear from you again Richard, I hope you are well. Thank you so much for your kind words, colour pencil is a time-consuming but rewarding medium, I hope you enjoy it. I haven't had as much time for it the last year but still keeping my toes dipped in when I can, same with birding really.

Glad I saw this video; thank you for the review, but I would never buy it. I need a new lamp for my drawing board as I do architectural illustrations. This would never work because it is just not tall enough. The light I have is about about 30 years old. This lamp would never last one-tenth of that. The nice thing about the light I have is that it's a combination of incandescent and fluorescent so it's a very near natural light. It has a long adjustable neck but after many years the adjustments have weakened and it won't hold its position very well. I guess I will have to keep looking.

I'm glad my review was helpful to you. No product is going to suit everyone :) Take a look at sewing lamps perhaps, I know they're often quite tall and flexible to work around large projects.

the problem is that these natural colours are totally insufficient even for a single animal portrait in its environment. you can hardly reproduce the colour of a cat yellow eyes or a owl eyes. They are meant for just reproducing some furs OR for remapping true colours into a muted version. I own this set because I was enthusiast of their peculiar muted autumnal colours but at the end if they don't add some vivid key colours are useless to me. I don't want to use two sets of pencils with different binders as many do for integrating the missing colours of this

thank you for this demnostration. Let me give you the advise to NEVER use an automatic exposure settings AND whitebalance on your camera especially for the kind of video you make. Derwent has some absurd marketing policies: they basically made not a set of colour for natural pictures but a set of colour for AUTUMNAL pictures. Aside from the obvious difficoulty at drawing details with wax based pencils they absurdly didn't add 4 more colours with a cold light green - typically called "leaf" green in Faber Castell set - or "pea" green, a full yellow, an orange or a poppy red and a deep blue. just 4-5 colours that would make drawing set complete. I don't want a set that requires to borrow colours from other set for doing any images: ok I can maybe draw maybe a fox with exactly its fur colours... and what about the whole environment around it? I don't have any doubt that Drawing set is not ment to be used for details or compete with polychromos. Probably it would be more meaningful comparing them with Prismacolor set that is wax based too
@brusheswithbec5 ай бұрын
Yes I have since changed the way I film with my camera and always use the manual exposure settings now. Learned that the hard way :) There's always going to rains to not compare two particular sets of pencils due to differences in colour range or pencil composition, but that's also as much reason to compare them. I always enjoy exploring the opportunities of a tool work for something if I wanted it to, and how much difference does wax vs oil based pencil really make.

Most pencils I have are FC Polychromos but I also have some Derwent (lightfast). Compared to the Derwent I find the Polychromo's a bit more garish..Depending on the kind of artwork you produce this is either something you like to look for or not. I would recommend 'Lightfast' ( also love these 'Drawing') in landscape over 'Polychromo's' but when you prefere you art to have bright colors, the other way around. I think they both have their superb quality depending to what you look for..

I love the paper but find it almost impossible to get a background. How would you do a background? Thantks super video, although a bit too dast.
@rosered82344 ай бұрын
Use pan pastels they make the best backgrounds - sofft tools make the work faster , good blending , you can use colour pencil over pan pastels , or pastal pencils .

6:08 I found that dipping the brush pens directly into a cup of water for a moment worked quite well to keep the colours vibrant and it helps make them less dull.

Bec I’m using the same materials but struggling with highlighting with a white pencil over the top of a darker colour on the dog I’m drawing.. ie doing whiskers etc …it just won’t show up.. do I just need to lay down the whites first?! Seems too waxy to go over Hope that makes sense?
@brusheswithbec8 ай бұрын
It can be tricky, especially if you've put a lot of pressure down in earlier layers. Many different things can impact it, the type of pencil, though you say you're using the same. Make sure it's nice and sharp, I try to flick it over the surface rather than press down and try to draw, if that makes sense. But again, this paper can only take so much application of pressure and once the tooth goes it can be very difficult to get those highlights to show.
@GroguTube8 ай бұрын
@@brusheswithbec thanks Bec.. yeah I think that’s what I’ve done and put too many dark layers down probably pressed too hard.. yep same paper and the polychromos .. sometimes rubbing it out first helps a bit But useful tip thank you xGem
@brusheswithbec8 ай бұрын
@GroguTube I find the Polychromos white isn't overly good at going over the top, if you have something more waxy like a Derwent Drawing or Lightfast it should be more effective.
@rosered82343 ай бұрын
Caran Dache pencils will absolutely go over darks , they are the only pencils that show up marvelously over dark layers , After applying derwent drawing pencils it can be very hard to layer over those pencils with another pencil , because its so waxy , CD white can do this , Also some acrylic white paint will paint over the layers , Slice tool could scrape some whiskers in 😊

Nice and informative video! As for the dryness of your watercolor brush pens, I got a 12 pack from Kmart and they seem to work really well when the tips are dipped directly into the water. I just do it gently so that the pigment doesn’t wash off the brush. Not sure if that would apply to your brush pens too? Is there anything on the packaging if you still have it?

I have no idea how people use Pastelmat for coloured pencils 🤷♀️ I've tried it a few times, it gets shiny (not in a good way) and grainy very quickly. Pan pastel clogs the paper a lot and prevents me from adding pastel pencils, let alone coloured pencil. I do not understand how people do it 🤷♀️ UArt and Lux Archival work beautifully. They practically turn the CP into pastels.

I know exactly how it works with a parrot in the background. We have a male Eclectus who always wants to chime in! I know you have plenty of those down there and would love it if you would draw one. I have always wanted to draw him, but I've been terrified of all those feathers.
