How practical would it be to use range and heading to compute a time on target and intercept point, then switch to some terminal guidance once it’s in the neighborhood?

Can I design a nozzle where theta_max is not 1/2 * nu_exit, but it is smaller? If yes, how do I apply the method of characteristics? If not, how do nozzle extensions work without modifying the upper part, especially the maximum wall deflection angle? Thank you in advance!
