That was a good tasting, too bad you couldn't do it live. I actually liked both of these quite a bit, the touch of sulphur/matchstick didn't bother me on batch 1. Hard to mark this kind of stuff when it's soooooo far out of my price-range😅 The Whisky Rant cask was great, too, and much better value, but had stiff competition in that particular lineup. Great review Rob.

Excellent review Rob. I'm a huge Benromach fan and have had many rare bottlings but this age is, alas, out of my price range. It's such an age that it's obviously before the modern version of Benromach. I want to say how I'm completely in tune with your new scoring system. I'm way tougher with points now but that's not to say that a whisky which is below 90 isn't any good. 90 is a bench mark for exceptional high end but we all love whisky that is 'merely' very good.

Great rant, guys. I have to agree on the loss of nose on outdoor drams. Just came back from a week camping, and none of my drams tasted quite the same. For 8 year peated: there's the Port Askaig 8yr that's great value, as well as some of the Elements of Islay bottlings (now discontinued) that were around that age and pretty tasty. Cheers guys!

So, I assume you know this, but rye as a distilled grain is unusual for actually being better when young and sharp/bright. Barley and other grains used to make scotch do better over time. I think this may be why 100% ryes tend to get blended with other things when aged for longer than 10 years. I see your point, but I actually quite like Dark Horse for what it is. I think the issue there is the nature of how 100% rye acts, especially in a virgin oak barrel. But this is also why Alberta Premium kind of shines in its cheaper younger form as a very bright sharp affordable whisky for the Canadian working class - either on the rocks or neat.

Nice comparison guys. I checked the LCBO website and it doesn't show up but will pick it up when it does. I did have the Basil Hayden Dark Rye that also had Port blended it. Did not like that! Hopefully the Lot40 does not disappoint. Thanks again.

Rob, you've got the bottles switched sides from the boxes--see the shades of the blues, and the word air can just be viewed on our right/your left, and the word kiln on your right/our left. I guess one could call this a double-blind tasting.😉 Did your pours match the boxes or the bottles?🤔 There's I think only 1 shop in all nz that has these whiskies, ~C$102, which I thought was a bit steep when I had a wee taste or them. I think Benromach makes fantastic whisky, but whereas their 15 used to be one of the best-priced in the market (here) it's now very much middle of the pack and no bargain. A pity.

Great idea for a head to head guys! I don't get the fascination with the Lagavulin 8, I think it's really harsh, possibly a rushed job and just not enjoyable. Similar thoughts go for the Kilkerran as well 😬 Maybe I just don't enjoy 8 year old whiskies 🤷♀ My lineup would be Ardbeg, Talisker, Laga and Kilkerran. Cheers fellas 🥃 Ps. the struggle of just standing infront of your bar trying to decide what to have is so real! Nonetheless, it's a good problem to have 😅

Maybe you got a bad bottle of the Laga? “Harsh” is the last word I’d use to describe it. As for the K8, I find it pretty rough sipped neat. Cut to about 48% it’s magic. YMMV.

37:00 call me crazy, but while iv never had the fortune to try the 6.3 octamore, the best peated scotch ive ever had, hands down, better than the best Lagavulin 12 (which ive had many), snd better than even the Springbang 12, is .. drum roll..... the Ledaig Bordeux 9! Wish I bought a case back when it was available.

Redbreast Lustau is oloroso, made from a mixture of bourbon and sherry barrels between 9 and 12 years old, with a further 1 yr maturation in first fill oloroso casks from the lustau bodega.

I think to solve the peat blindness you really need to compare something you would consider heavily peated vs the ultra peated dram. I opened my hypernova recently "150-170 ppm" and was like you puzzled. I felt wow it's smoky but not that smoky. Opened my uigeadail and gave that a quick smell as an A-B. Brown sugar candy sweetness, zero peat. It turns all other Islay peated bottles into candy. Went up and down the collection popping corks and contrasting against the hypernova. All sweetness.
@Whiskyfan51916 күн бұрын
Abolish the LCBO, privatize now. I don't want liquor in grocery stores, have private establishments that sell. The Alberta model is the best way. That said go to younger peated whisky I mean I'll include nas because who really knows what the age is, gotta say laphroaig quarter cask, and I'll put heavy vapours committee release up as well. I love the funky lactic vibe it has. Wish I picked up 2 bottles. Can't go wrong with a young kilchoman as well.

The Turbo is the only new Glenallachie I've tried and it was absolutely fantastic, I'm not sure how it would do against Octomore but someone needs to do it. Cheers! Out of these 8 year Olds I've only tried the Kilkerran and I love that one. Next one I'd pick to try is the Talisker. Lagavulin is really good for sure but I'd go for the other ones just for the novelty
