When you say the noise floor is lower or higher- how do you know that the difference is not in the actual noise floor but differences in the gain of the 2 different antenna amplifiers? The only true test is to compare signal/noise.

Hi thanks for this video, do you have a link for the aluminium rods pls or a part number at screwfix, 2nd question, how would I then connect this to my Grecom hand held scanner please? Sorry for the noob questions, thanks.

Hi it was forty minutes I believe it is usually thirty but as we had some storm clouds in the area the pilot took us to a clear area before the real fun began, the staff at Tatenhill were brilliant and can highly recommend them,

Great tool with many applications to comer. But you will never control all this from a flimsy the touch panel. We should ditch the display and connect this to a chromebook via USB.

Putting a bigger loop on the MLA-30 makes a big difference. My antenna for example receives down to around ~20KHz. Submarine communication DHO38 on 23,4 KHz, the British time signal on 60, the German on 77,5 and a couple more at night and day. It's basically a homemade YouLoop with 3 m circumference on the MLA-30 amplifier. Still goes up to around 30 MHz.

Page 65 of my old 1970 ARRL Antenna Book defines a "small loop" antenna is one whose total length is short compared to the wavelength received, so even a 3 m diameter loop qualifies as a "small loop" at LW. On the same page, it says that small loops "are widely used at frequencies below the standard broadcast band for direction finding." If small loops are directional, do you have a way of rotating your 3 m diameter loop? I am pleasantly surprised to read that your MLA-30+ amplifier works at LW frequencies. I have read that the MLA-30+ is not very directional at HF frequencies. How directional is your 3 m loop at HF? Thanks!

A reasonably fair assessment, though you tend to try and explain the difference when the MLA is better than the Wellbrook. The other way around, you say "as expected" of the W/B. Also, the MLA-30 is beyond its design range below 500kHz, so the comparison is not valid.

Try making a loop from cheap rg6 coax,use the same length as the supplied wire.just use the outside of the coax.you will see the difference then.

Doesn't it have a touch screen? Also, you should look at SWR and impedance of the antenna. You want your SWR as close to 1.00 as possible (<1.50 is good) and your impedance to be the same as your receiver and cables (usually 50ohms)
@requiem4adreamc
@requiem4adreamc Жыл бұрын
What happens if impedance is different? I have a cell phone signal booster. It works at 50ohm impedance. But coax is 75ohm. What would happen in long term or short term?

Thanks for the video very useful . Can I still hear airband channels clearly enough that are using the 8.33 khz frequently on a 25 khz step scanner ?
@daic7274
@daic7274 2 жыл бұрын
Yes,although you will likely miss some transmissions. If you can scan at 12.5 or 5khz that would be better and pick up more transmissions. I also use an older scanner and am limited to 50,25,12.5 and 5khz. Also, depending where you live and what airport's you can receive this may not be much of a problem, I am in south Wales and pick up Cardiff and Bristol airport's, their main frequencies are located on the older channel spacing i.e they have not changed, so reception with old scanners is not a problem. St Athens airfield uses 8.33 but not very often use any newer channels that fit the 8.33 channel spacing. Some bigger international airports and European flights use 8.33 channels more than some of the smaller airports. Also worth scanning for are ground frequencies in the UHF Band if you have decent reception of tower and radar. Here you can hear aircraft getting instructions before takeoff etc. Usually around 460-470MHz. Get yourself a copy of the UKAGF book, the current 2022 version is out and lists all the airports and frequencies. Ofcom website, licence database you can find uhf frequencies that are licensed to airports.

@MrMesospheric
@MrMesospheric Жыл бұрын
If you divide the difference in performance by the difference in price, then, well, the value for money argument is won by the MLA, hands-down. The WellGood loop is also worth considering at this (and much higher) price point, and may well be better than the MLA.

Hi, regarding long wave. I've tried the Bias-T on my SDRplay and this massively reduced LW signal strength compared to when I used the Biasing Tee that was supplied with the MLA30. I must admit I have the MLA30+ though, but maybe you can give that a try or try a different supply which delivers ~12V rather than the 4.7V that the SDRplay can only deliver.

How dare you even suggest this piece of garbage?! Cheap Chinese junk! It can only do 2/3 of things my Tek TTR500 can do! And my TTR500 was only $14,000! If you can't even afford a small price of $14,000, why do you even bother? Radios are for rich people only, get your easily affordable products outta here! I'm kidding, of course, but I see a lot of folks that rag on inexpensive gear just because it's not top shelf and this is how they sound to me as a beginner ham and not very rich person lol. Also I have no clue what a TTR500 can or cannot do, it was just the first model I found on Google.
