Will a cheap SSD possibly damage my PS4 Pro? I've seen some really cheap ones

It's the interface causing the speed limits, not the drive in the case of an SSD. SATA III is limited to 600mbs. A typical m.2 2.5" will run 560mbs. Putting an nvme in a SATA III enclosure means you are limiting its potential to 600mbs instead of it's potential 3500mbs. Pointless experiment.

I'm using two external drives, one NVMe (SK Hynix Gold P31) and one SATA III (Samsung EVO 870) both in external enclosures, ofc. I would recommend getting SATA if it's cheaper which it usually is but if you can get an NVMe at a decent price there's no harm in using that either, though you won't really notice the difference from the SATA. I've noticed speeds for both top out at 2.8Gbps and average 2.5Gbps (350MB/s) likely due to the South bridge controller they're (still) using on the Series S. The reason I got the NVMe is because it was on sale on Prime Day for £29 for a 500GB and that's an amazing price for such a good drive, didn't work out any more expensive than a SATA since I paid same price for my 500GB EVO 870 and when I no longer need it any more for my Series S (when I get an expansion card in the future when the price drops a little) I can use it in my laptop and get the full potential or even in it's enclosure it can do 10Gbps with laptop but I'll probably upgrade my laptop with it. If you can get one at the same price I did and it's not more expensive than the same size SATA I might even say choose the NVMe over the SATA because it will probs have better TBW endurance. An you can always as I say use it to stick in a laptop and get the full power when you no longer need it. There is a silicon power NVMe right now on Amazon 500GB for £23 which is same price as SATA's and I tested that and even though it doesn't have DRAM it was very close to the Hynix P31 in performance and speeds didn't drop like they do with DRAM less SATA's since it's faster logical memory.

Don't know why the algorithm brought me here. But you have a relaxing voice! There are certain songs I hear that bring me back to great moments in gaming. I listen to the Metal Gear Solid soundtracks often. Bloodborne's orchestral and vocal tracks are fantastic as well.

I know this video is irrelevant now, since ps4 is old .. but if by the off chance you are looking to upgrade your ps4's ssd, do not follow this guy and put in a DRAM-less SSD inside your ps4.. DRAM less SATA ssds are fine for storage, but they are terrible for running an OS... even though in THEORY they should still beat out a hard drive, in the real world tests this is NOT the case. On PS4 for some reason these drives cause random issues in certain games, (example stuttering in spiderman), it really doesn't matter which one (sandisk ssd plus, crucial bx500, wd green, patriot p210, kingston a400, silicon power a58, team group Vulcan/whatever....etc), they all will exhibit these random stuttering and texture issues for certain games... However the good news is that you can use the drives externally on PS4 and on PS5, (through an exclosure ot sata to usb adapter), and because it doesn't need to run the OS or record gameplay in the background, the issues not appear. But on ps4/pro for the fastest possible load times you would still want to install a dram sata ssd (samsung evo, crucial mx, wd blue, sandisk ultra... etc) internally inside the console.

I’ve had a slim with a sandisk ultra 3D nand 2tb ssd since 2019 and upgraded my secondary ps4 pro I got back in February of this year , 7200 model series - put in a Samsung 870 manufactured in March 23, 2023 made in China. It really is worth it even just to break into the Sony store immediately , hit the user interface on the fly , very fast cold boot ups both of the slim and ps4 pro line of consoles. Reason why I mentioned the Samsung evo 870 and it’s region of manufacturing and date , there’s been a big controversy in forums that Samsung Evo 870 ssds from 2021 to late 2022 are prone to data corruption but there is not enough information out there in regard to these drives being installed in game console upgrades and causing issues later on, just within notebooks and pc desktops so far. So I’m crossing my fingers Atleast for my recent PS4 Pro ssd upgrade I did that the drive will not suddenly die on me within the next year or so ( even though they got long warrantees ) . I am also outside of the known defective product release bracket but my model / make of Samsung evo 870 hasn’t been out long enough yet to really see if the hold up to the tests of time in any devices as well.

@@Testimony201 If you really care about speed the PS5 is honestly a better option. The SSD is faster but not by much maybe 30secs. It's not dramatic like putting a SSD into a old laptop. There are comparison videos online. Another option would be to use an external SSD, that too works.

I just set 2nd SSD as external storage and copied 1.2TB to it.. after a few swaps, ALL my PS4 1TB and 512GB USB were on the 2nd SSD.. Fitted a Samsung 3.84TB into PS4 Pro but HAD to use the FULL version of Firmware - Update version would NOT work. 10.01. Drive up and running so 2nd SSD copied everything back over. just had to pop onto PSN to restore licences but it saved downloading over 1TB again.. Worth the time doing the swap.. 2nd SSD is now in my laptop as system - 2TB and fast. Best drive swaps ever!!

I fitted a 1TB SSD to a Xbox One X, primarily because the hard drive failed. Being that I'd have to take the old one out before putting it all back together, it made sense to do it. Took the time to clean, change the thermal paste and generally refresh the console. Also fitted one to a One S, but that's because I wanted more internal space and I had a spare 2TB SSD hanging around from a client who wanted a upgrade for the laptop and then cancelled. Simple.

When you tested the External SSD, did you have the internal SSD installed or the internal HDD installed? I feel like there should be four tests total. An external SSD test for each internal drive, a test for the onboard SSD and a test for the Internal SSD. Did the internal SSD made the dashboard snappier? I'm wondering if it's worth replacing my Internal HDD for an Internal SSD.

I got a Crucial BX500 1tb on my PS4 Slim, rendering textures, draw distance, faster starting loading, faster save loading, faster fast travel, the console doesn't get as hot as it used to, less noise, the PS4 system runs smoother, even though PS4 Slim does not use the full potential of an SSD I believe it's a good purchase for people who will not sell tgeir console when they get a next-gen one. In Valhalla the SSD improved greatly the game experience for me. In RDR2 Story and Online it's like another game. Well, this is my humble opinion.

The One X was made with an NVMe KeyM M.2 SSD in it. you can see on the motherboard that big honking KeyM NVM2 area where there is also an outlign for an M2. and it was a KeyM NVMe as far as I can tell. wirdly enough it is even populated with discrete of the shelf component for that NVMe, but Microsoft never fitted that M.2 socket. Microsoft likely dropped the NVMe in the last moment, and went for 5400RPM drives and sata3 controller as the NVMe drives would have elevated the cost a lot back in 2017 Have any tried to solder a M.2 socket in? could for the fun of it be interesting to see how it would act.. I haven't been three the schematics to see if there is an NVme controller chip lurking somewhere, btw that One X is a night and day in my testing native 5400rpm versus a cheap SSD. the One X screams for an SSD internally (max2TB) or externally. The system can tolerate 26TB SSD as far as I can tell. (2TB int + 3x 8TB ext)and the system is very dynamic with the storage as you can place mismatch games across it, so fx 20% of one game on one SSD and 20% in another and the last 60% on a third or fourth drive, in my testing with internal SSD /cheap 60USD 1TB Sata3 from CN, brand Netac/ my startup time to interface was 35sec. on fx Halo Infinite is takes 9 sec. to load the 4K HDR map of thee "Silent Auditorium" almost at the end of the campaign. (from progress bar to the gameplay) if somebody is on mechanical, pls share your time. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJl3oNh8rb--YHU.html

On Forza 5 I saw 80% reduction in loading times in regards to those times, in the start when being lifted out of the Red Bull plane. went from 36s to 9 sec. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sKufnZxmqLiveqM.html and that was just on an external SSD, an old Intel600P budget 256GB drive from 2015 in a cheap NVMe to USB3 enclosure. sata3 SSD and also NVMe to USB3 even though your dealing with a sata3, the access times, does wonders for pop in and loading textures and frame spikes - as a lot of this is down the horrendous bad acces times on mechanical drives. IN many games Im seeing pretty much the same loading times on One X as Series X even though the Series X are on an NVMe MB controller..
