Obviously you CAN. It just would make the game really tedious and boring lol. People have beat the game with NO gun. I think I saw a run on KZfaq where someone used the starter pistol. I actually don't even think it would be very hard with gambled weapons because at least they are leveled to the player. That matters a lot in BL2 because at some point it becomes better to pick up the appropriately leveled common gun over using the legendary you got 20+ levels ago.

i beat the Pre-Sequel! 18 times back-to-back (playthrough with every character to max level) and it was more fun than playing Borderlands 3 with the dialogue turned on.

There's actually an extremely helpful glitch with Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt. Simply fast travel to the DLC, and run past all the enemies until you reach Sir Hammerlock. Once you do run with him to the cliff edge but then run back to where you first speak to him. He will remain in place and kill multiple high level enemies but the game counts that as kills for YOU, netting a TON of EXP
