I have a Fender super reissue, when I turn the reverb up past two, the amp distorts and loses volume. Can you share any ideas what may cause that? I put all new JJ tubes in it and it didn’t fix the problem. I’m afraid to use it for a job, fearing it might burn something up. It’s around a 92 or 94

Hi, I am the guy that sold the radio to you. The radio works. Make sure ANL is on, AVC is on, CW/SSB switch is in CW/SSB, RFG is all the way up, IFG is all the way up, Standby Receive Switched to Receive. Looking at the rear the speaker hook up is Ground is the right screw and 8 ohm is the middle screw. It spent over a week last winter on my bench removing failed mods, getting all new caps and getting it working again. Very sorry to hear your having trouble with it!!!!

Well done, Terry! I've had to replace similar components under similar conditions, and you point out the proper technique. You do have to learn how to look and understand how the components mount, and vary your methods accordingly. The right tools help as well; a temperature controlled soldering iron, quality desoldering wick, and diagonal cutting pliers as you showed.

How are you reading a voltage on an out-of-circuit transistor? Checking for a short, I take resistance readings in “ohms” .
@billsoule58242 күн бұрын
Not knowing the reason you were changing this out do you still have this part to measure the individual caps for capacitance, ESR in respect to the individual Lelon and Nichicon parts? That would be interesting to know and/or is there is a datecode on the Weber can to get a rough MTBF of the Weber construction and the datecodes if marked on the individual caps?

Terry, Great idea of keeping the original cap in place..and adding the jack to the chassis. I still have my original 1481..all original except for grounded power plug…and I replaced the first tube to the left..the original is still in working order it causing some minor issues. I also have a vintage Fender Champ ..same vintage ..I think the Silvertone outshines the Champ in a few areas , you mentioned the Silvertone tubes..I was told my a few sources that Sears used RCA tubes that they rebranded..I play my 1482 with my all original Sears Dolphin head 415 U1 copper guitar Great site you have here!

Bought a cheap pot on Amazon, and now waiting for an Alpha to get here. Not sure I want to do the final mod after a glass of pinot, but maybe do the mod first...just sayin'. 🙂

It's interesting that the 6AQ5 began to flatten the bottom of the wave before going into grid clipping. The 6V6 clipped both sides simultaneously. I'm sure this is due to the bias point being more center biased in the 6V6 amp.

I just read somewhere that one has to be careful sometimes if one side of the speaker out is grounded or also can create problems. They suggested first ohming out (with all turned off) the two speaker leads to chassis ground? Also how do you check if signal generator is not grounded?

For those outside the US, the older machine screw system is common even today and most vintage American amplifiers use it. The first number is an arbitrary rod size and the second, the number of threads per inch. Very common are 8-32, 6-32, and 4-40... also 10-32, 10-24. This maybe useful in locating replacements.

Maybe the assembly person ringed the wire with their strippers back in the day, and it took 40 years to snap. I could see how this could happen, having worked in a factory panel shop doing point to point wiring.

Is the fishing line twisted pair, so you can provide the proper filament voltage? Do you have any problems with the lures and the "current flow"? 😊

It’s too bad. People just don’t know how to package things. I bought a hewlett Packard Barney Oliver amplifier a few weeks ago from a guy. Gave him very specific instructions on how to package it, which he didn’t do. I don’t even know where he found such a thin box. Box came destroyed but thankfully the unit made it. Could have been a lot worse. UPS store is just staffed by college age kids with no experience in shipping/packaging, I’d never use that service.

Wow! I purchased a used JCM Marshall 4501 combo from Guitar center. I received it yesterday from UPS. Plugged the amp power cord in and made sure the gain and volume knobs were all turned down. I turned on the amp w/ out the guitar plugged in and after less than a minute it started making the same exact popping noise as the amp you are demoing. It started getting louder. I plugged in my guitar and played some chords but no sound came out from the guitar except for the popping noise that was already popping. CRAZY.... any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Brings back memories... The first time I got zapped by plate voltage at about age 8 or 9, I was troubleshooting a Heathkit AA-100 amp, using the brilliant technique of finger signal injection. I was working my way through the stages, hitting the grids and hearing the speaker. I got to the output tubes and somehow miscounted the pins and poked the plate. I saw a big blue flash inside my eyes and was ejected back into my bed from where I was standing. Good lesson for a kid 😂 ☮️
