The word comes from Apalachee, the Native American Tribe. There is only one correct way to say it, please stop spreading misinformation.
@SpeechModification2 күн бұрын
Thank for the information. Do you have any information on the correct native pronunciation? I found this about some possible origins of the name: Ethnographer John Reed Swanton wrote that Apalachee may have come from the Hitchiti language term for "people on the other side" or the Choctaw language word apelachi meaning "a helper."[4] It has sometimes been spelled Abalache, Abalachi, or Abolachi.[5} *4 Swanton, John R. (2003). The Indian Tribes of North America. Washington, DC: Smithsonian Institution. p. 122. ISBN 978-0-806317304. * 5 Clark, Patricia Roberts (21 October 2009). Tribal Names of the Americas: Spelling Variants and Alternative Forms, Cross-Referenced. McFarland. p. 10. ISBN 978-0-7864-5169-2. And this: Names: The name Apalachee comes from the language of their Hitchiti neighbors, and means "people on the other side." Their original name for themselves was never recorded; it's possible that Apalachee people normally identified themselves by their village name, as many Southeastern people did, rather than using a special name to refer to their tribe in general. They were also sometimes known as San Luis Indians, after the name of the Spanish fort based in their territory, Mission San Luis de Talimali. Tribal descendants today call themselves Apalachees. Alternate spellings of this name include Appalachi, Apalache, Appalachee, and Apalachi. (source: www.native-languages.org/apalachee.htm#language) Guide to Apalachee pronunciation: www.native-languages.org/apalachee_guide.htm

Also, on a side note, "misinformation" means incorrect or misleading information. It is not incorrect to say that there are many ways that people pronounce this name, and while I do agree that it is best practice to find and use the original names when possible, even the name "Apalachee" is another tribe's name for the native peoples from the area, not their own name. Words, names, language and pronunciation all change over time, because they are used by people, and people make mistakes, mistakes become a new correct way of speaking, and communication evolves. We often don't like it when it comes to things that are in flux and we know what we consider the "correct" way, but if you look at any language over time, it is not a static thing.

Thank you, Christine, for a wonderful video! Though I'm a bit confused now. Could you please help clear things up? I've noticed that a lot of words in American English are affected by the "cot-caught merger"which means that in most cases I don't need to worry about the /ɔː/ sound as I can easily replace it with the sound /ɑː/ (law, walk, caught and etc.) However, it's also true that when it's followed by the sound /r/ it doesn't usually sounds like /ɑː/ and is likely to be pronounced as /ɔːr/ (port, board, Ford, lord, and so on). Sounds pretty logical 😀 but it seems like the word "borrow" doesn't really fall into this category... Is it more of an exeption? Are there any other words that have "or" in them but are still pronounced with /ɑː/? I'd appreciate your help!
@SpeechModification4 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. Some other words with /ɑ/ + r instead of /ɔr/ are "borrow, sorrow, sorry, tomorrow." We also have a lot of words with "or" that have the /ər/ sound like "word" or "information." Also some where we have /əˈr/ like "original" and "correct."

Excellent!! I have a weird question ❓ haha so to say the word 'not', we position the tongue to say "n" and next, the tongue is low rest or low and pull back and the air come out? Another question ❓, when you pull your tongue a little back, do you feel like a vibration? Thanks in advance❤
@SpeechModification4 күн бұрын
Yes, you're correct - the tongue drops down after the /n/ to make the vowel sound, and there will be vibration for both /n/ and the vowel because they are voiced sounds.
@dianaprieto39674 күн бұрын
@@SpeechModification but the tongue pull back a little bit to make "a" as in 'not"? Right?
@SpeechModification4 күн бұрын
The tongue is mostly just down but it should be open in the back for this vowel. Here's more on this topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n51ko5abp8W5lJ8.html
