This is such revisionist nonsense: On a universal human level it's a shame poorly trained boys were killed but who put them there in the first place and in support of what kind of system of rule?! Also, does anyone seriously believe 'take no prisoners' means 'let them go'? Perhaps the Brits could've handled it all in a more nuanced way, but that would've been ahistorical. They had an Empire to maintain and Empire is based on the suppression of anyone trying to stand up for themselves.

At my ripe old age of 60, the uprising and what the IRA was in 1916 compared to the '70s and beyond always used to confuse me. And MRS BROWN made it so understandable and relatable?!? Hats off to Brendan O'Carroll🫡🫡 this was an amazing program

Why did the British put them all together? Seems a strange decision. There could only be one outcome of that. 😮

The oddest bit was the comparison with islamic jihadists. Their conception of martyrdom is different, self-immolation Edit: "not" martyrdom, and Patrick Henry Pearse died through execution (He was obviously willing to die through warfare which he considered as a soldier for Ireland. Maybe perverse but certainly not cultish, the Rising was done deliberately not like an insurgency and failed (Although with my limited knowledge I think it could have won if the orders were not rescinded and the Castle and other approaches defended.) yet he is portrayed here as a lunatic. Bear in mind too that there were plenty of non-"culters" in the Rising.). On the other hand I happen to agree on the other points, it was British over-reaction more than anything that sealed it, in fact I do not even see how the executions are excessive (They tried to over-throw the government, what else would you do?). A pardon would have been politically sensible and it is definitely true that the rebellion was really unpopular. Try to square what I wrote with the fact I am a Monarchist and an Irish Nationalist.

😁Funny, but true anecdote from 1969/70 when Prof Michael O'Kelly (UCC Archaeology Dept) was preeminent at New Grange. I was not directly involved in this innocent fun. Archaeology Students from UCC were volunteering at the site during Summer Tourist Season, acting as tour guides, when it was getting very late but visitors were disinclined to remove themselves. One student feigned alarm saying to the other student 'was that crack in the ceiling there this morning'? (it had been there millennia) which instantly got the attention of the tardy visitors. 'No', said the other student, at which the visitors swiftly evacuated the monument and the volunteers were able to lock up and leave. 🤣

What I don't understand is why not one of the 1916 leaders ran for election before starting a rebellion. The case for a republic - and the case for achieving it by any means necessary - was never put before the people. The case for home rule was put to the people by the IPP and won an overwhelming mandate. The rebels should have done the same, if only to establish there was widespread backing for extreme actions.

Interestingt he Brits talk about the cult of blood sacrifice. Don't they have their own? The Somme? Rememberance day? Battle of Britain? And so many more. What about that fella who charged an Argie machine gun nest during the falklands...no blood sacrifice there nah?
