Best idea I've seen so far, thank you! I thought of a similar thing but with a wooden panel but indeed your materials would be much cheaper and would work just fine!

Went ahead and smashed that like button because you’re smart, crafty and helpful sir lol while I may not actually do this looking at a window seal you get off Amazon and then watching you carefully craft a well insulated homemade one that likely works 10x as good as 30 bucks on Amazon. Very cool!

We ended up making a second one. It does, although some users have highlighted that there might be a risk of harmful gas being released from polystyrene directly heated by sun. Alternative material perhaps? 30 - 50mm PIR sheet perhaps..

I just use my window screen for my insulation frame, all because I have the crank casement windows, that way I still have option to open and close it on a rainy day without removing the insulation i have a backup window ac in my bathroom that slides up and down, for a back up when it rain out to fill in for the portable ac.

I ended up using twin wall Polycarbonate sheet from b&q cut it to fit . Applied hook & eye tape to secure to the window frame. And when not in use I either pull of the frame to close the window or wrap some insect screen around the opening with a reusable cable tie to stop bugs coming in. Been working brilliantly in this heat. 😄

We have rolladens that I pull down to clamp the exhaust down and make it dark. Could I skip the insulation foil?
@techlifediy2 жыл бұрын
You could skip the insulation foil but it adds extra insulating properties. Also seals polystyrene from melting perhaps from extreme heat. Other users have used PIR and polycarbonate (@4nnetes) sheets which may also be great alternatives! Good luck

@techlifediy2 жыл бұрын
We do not have sceens/nets on our windows and good point, no, nothing will stop bugs from getting into the air con unit I guess. Haven't had an issue though yet. Thanks
@advancedflea2 жыл бұрын
I purchased some fly screen from Amazon, cut off the amount I needed, used a cable-tie to tie that around the end of the exhaust pipe. It does make the unit slightly louder, owing to the noise of the exhaust air being pushed though the holes in the screen material. It solves the problem though as last year I did see wasps sniffing around the pipe. They weren't able to get in though. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07DDB9BFM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&th=1
@techlifediy2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps worth checking that the net doesn't put extra strain on the air conditioner pushing the exhaust air out through added obstacle (making more noise..). But the idea sounds great and glad you found a solution to the fly problem :) Thanks for updating us all.
@advancedflea2 жыл бұрын
@@techlifediy I had the same same thought :) It does put a little air resistance there but not a signifigant amount. It doesn't seem to be enough to affect the unit. I actually came up with a minor improvement to your design that is for people with "fan light" type windows. The window arms (used for holding the window open and locking it) stick out proud of the frame. So I got a jam jar, put that over where the window arms are, drew around it then cut a star in the foam. That way the window arms can poke through, insects are unlikely to get in, and ony minimal hot air comes back through. Perhaps I should post a video detailing it lol.
@lisamgreenleaf2 жыл бұрын
I would probably remove it and shut the window when not in use. I don't think bugs would go near the exhaust when being used

looks good, I have a similar problem with a 10' wood fence, except whoever put it in didn't put any concrete in around the posts on my yard side, just in the easement where it was easy to access when they built it, so now half of the backside leans inward. I don'[t have allot of time at home from work to do anything so this may work for me. A tip though, always mix your concrete in a 5 gallon bucket for each post with a drill and mixer blade, and prewet the hole so the soil doesn't wick away the water fromt he concrete mix leading to a weak layer on the outside.
@techlifediy2 жыл бұрын
Really good shout with the bucket actually, thanks! Hope you found the time to fix yours

Thank you so much... This is brilliant! You did a fantastic job. So much so that I just followed your directions and made one of these for a Newair AC-10100E. We just moved into a house, and the window screens are inside the window glass. This seal is perfect for that. It even allows for removing the seal and opening the window quickly when the air conditioner is not in use. The only thing I changed was that I used a thinner sheet of foam core and wrapped it in insulation on both sides for a slimmer profile. I also covered the edges of the hole with duct tape after adding the insulation, similar to how you wrapped it earlier in the video when you reinforced the edges around the polystyrene before applying the insulation. So basically, I did it twice to complete the hole, making it durable enough that the hose can be removed intermittently when the seal is not in use. I also made sure that the foam core was wholly sealed from moisture. I then added a gasket along the edge in places that didn't have velcro. When installed, the hose is flush with the windscreen which automatically protects the open end of the hose and prevents problems with pests. I live in Hawaii, and the sun is really intense here all year round and heats up homes in no time during the day. I'm using this in conjunction with the De'Longhi insulated hose cover, and the unit cools my office quickly. The hose cover is a MUST-HAVE for any portable air conditioner owner. It's night and day, in terms of the performance and efficiency of the unit. The hose cover prevents heat from escaping into the room from the exhaust hose. The De'Longhi one WORKS. The hose is barely warm to the touch even after using the unit for a few hours. My office is about 135 sq ft with a 20 ft sloped ceiling that heats up dramatically in the late afternoon sun. This seal is a headache saver. Thanks again.

Looks exactly like mine, even the crossbars. Question: Do you have a problem with loud humming in your front end/windshield area at spontaneous times? I started noticing this vibration/noise in what seemed like the time period after having my crossbars and rails installed. Maybe it was something that was coming on anyway, I don't know, all I know is they didn't know what was causing it as it never did it to them when they had it (of course). Then, I noticed the cover to the rear view mirror wiring was lifting on the passenger side, and before I knew it, my windshield started leaking. They replaced the windshield, and I was praying that would fix that noise, but it still does it, but it doesn't seem as loud as before. Time will tell. Does any of this sound familiar?

And btw, why didn't the dealership show this to my husband and me when we bought our Evoque? So annoying to learn of these important instructions from a youtube video online and not them.
@techlifediy2 жыл бұрын
This is such a coincidence! We started getting this humming noise recently in our Evoque too!! It seems as if it comes from the box area where the internal rear view mirror is attached to. It triggers exactly at 39 - 43 mph, otherwise it isn't there. Something to do vibration resonance perhaps. No idea if it is to do with roof rails or cross bars. We have had these on for a year now, usually carry an XL Thule roof box. Will keep you posted if we find a solution and likewise if you do, please drop a comment back! Thanks for stopping by.
