Would you recommend this as a good foundational course option as a first class in the program? I am drafting a course plan but I have a mix of hassles like with my previous comments, mainly around math prereqs for other courses and I want to kind of ease into the program before tackling another course that I am more interested in. I saw that this course fills up quickly so unsure about that as well.

I do if you have minimal software development experience. Like you mention, this course is harder to get, which is a bit of a shame, but it is a good option for a first course if you can get it

You definitely can. It’s just that most people don’t do the thesis option, which is what I’d recommend if you want to do a PhD

I hear the job market still isn’t great but slowly improving. Pivoting within your current field is usually easiest, I guess for you that would be EdTech

Hey Alan! For OMSCS, the most important thing is highlighting academic CS experience. That could be CS courses, CS research, etc. Secondarily, non-CS academic experience (research, scholarships, awards, TAing) and professional CS experience (software development) are also useful. Hope that helps!

How are you saying a course is 7k? I think you messed up there as a course is 198-335 per hour so that’s more like 700 dollars

@@sam_cant_code 👍🏼 no problem I just figured it was a mistake. I’m curious as to how the tests were done. I’m doing tests for computer analytics and everything is multiple choice. That kinda surprises me. I’m curious if you have a video about that. Thanks in advance

Wait, I may have misunderstood, but doing 1 course a semester will cost 7k per semester? That seems quite expensive..

Sorry if that was unclear, I meant that taking 1 course a semester costs about $700, so $7k for the whole program (10 courses). It’s cheaper if you take 2 or 3 courses since there’s a flat fee per semester. I went to look at the actual cost, it was $647 for 1 class and $1,187 for 2. It used to be $841 for 1 class but they dropped one of the flat fees. As an example, I did OMSCS in 7 semesters so the total cost was $6,149 (really $647 since both employers covered the cost except for the one semester where I switched jobs)

Hi Sam! Coming from r/OMSCS, and I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your channel. Videos like these are super helpful for prospective OMSCS students who don't have a traditional CS background. I'm taking CS courses at my local CC and loving it, so to see you have the same path is inspiring to me. 4/5 of your class-specific videos so far are courses I'm considering taking, so it's been very helpful to hear your thoughts. Will you be making videos for each course that you took? I'm really interested in hearing about your experience with HPCA and GA. Congrats on graduating!

That’s awesome! My goal is to release a new course review every week in the order that I took them. So it will be Intro to Information Security, High Performance Computer Architecture, Global Entrepreneurship, Graduate Algorithms and finally Digital Marketing

Great review! I've taken 4 courses until now, how was the workload in AI4R for you? Do you think you could have paired up with any other course?

Probably around 10hrs/wk on average, with more time around when projects were due. I definitely could’ve paired it, but probably only with a course of equal or lesser difficulty

Definitely! Personally, I had a bioengineering BS before OMSCS. Knowing some DSA and web development is great. The most important part for admissions is having academic CS experience

Thank you-this is a really great video! I’m starting the program this fall and want to take GIOS as my first class. About how many hours a week do you think you spent on the course? Also, do you plan to take AOS in the future? Cheers!

Happy to hear! I probably spent about 20 hrs/wk, but there were definitely peaks where I spent more. I didn’t end up taking AOS, and I’ve already graduated, but I’ve heard it’s a great class and might take it in the future

I did bioengineering for undergrad. I did quite a few MOOCs to see if I liked computer science, but specifically to prepare for OMSCS I did four community college classes

Great video man. I’m followin a similar path as you coming from a non-CS background (finance/econ/math). Were you able to get your employer to cover the cost of those 4 community college courses? I am currently taking some CS courses and don’t think my employer covers tuition that is “non-degree seeking” Thank you, Keyshawn

Hey Keyshawn! My employer did cover the cost of the CC classes, but since you have a math background you may not need many classes to get an Associate's in CS. Maybe then your employer would pay? I did an engineering undergrad and I think I only needed like 2 more CC classes to get my Associate's. I considered it but didn't end up going for it since I was going do OMSCS anyways

I think they’re unlikely to cover it given it has to be directly related to my role (currently on the business side hoping to transition to tech eventually) but definitely worth a shot. It’s nice to know there’s companies out there with a more liberal tuition reimbursement policies, thought they were all more or less the same.

Great video! This class looks like a great first pick for me this fall, but I do have an important question. And this is not just for this class, but the entire program: I SUCK at math. Like, I have an undergrad in COMPSCI and work as a software engineer, but the most math I’ve taken is maybe calculus 1? And at this point my skills have been forgotten or regressed heavily. For someone who doesn’t know what specialization they want (AI or Architecture), what concepts would you recommend I brush up and learn on as a baseline? Or I guess, overall how much math was necessary throughout the program for you? Do you recommend any resources to brush up on the necessary math, or any courses that aren’t as math heavy and maybe teach you a bit of the fundamentals to start off the program with? So most of the computing systems classes don’t require much math at all, while the robotics and machine learning courses require more (linear algebra and statistics mostly). If you’re interested in some of those classes, AI for Robotics and Machine Learning for Trading are good “ramp up” courses. Since I did the computing systems specialization, AI4R was probably the most “mathy” class I took. I mentioned this in another reply, but my biggest piece of advice is to just take it one class at a time, prep for that class reasonably well, and then relax. It’s a marathon not a sprint, and your motivation and mental health will be a much greater asset than whatever material you prep (which may or may not end up being useful).

Do you have any recommendations on general resources I should prep using for the program? I just got accepted and to be honest I’m kind of overwhelmed. I’m scared of burnout too since I just graduated in 2023 and started working, and don’t know if I will be able to manage my time and creativity between my job, my coursework and my hobbies. If that’s even realistic. I am interested in ai, computer architecture, robotics and HCI. But I saw that Math and calculus is a necessity for ai and robotics, and that is my weak spot. I don’t know how to prep or prioritize my prep in the next 3 months. I also read that the first 2 classes I need a B or higher which is something I need to prep for. I work I’m using c# at work, but for the program this is what I’m thinking for prep: 1. Learn Python, since a lot of courses that I want to take in AI, Robotics and HCI seem to use it, and it’s the one language I don’t have experience with. And other learning paths seem to need it too over other languages. 2. Review Data structures and algorithms using Python to solidify my understanding of Python and review the basic DSA. Do some LeetCode (not for job prep), but to review DSA concepts. 3. Do a project with Python as practice. 4. Review Math and calculus. That’s going to be the tough one. Math is my weak spot. How did you prep? Or are you just great at math? How much math did you need in the program in ai and robotics classes? Or HCI? 4. Learn C, as have no low level language experience from undergrad or my first job. As important as this is, it’s probably behind learning Python and math for the program, since those two are more prevalent in the coursework I want to take (unless I take a architecture course or path, which means that is big then). Sorry I just wrote a whole essay at you. What would you say or recommend based on my overall thoughts and feelings above? Did you feel the same v Did you get burned out at all? Or feel like you couldn’t spend time with or be creative in your hobbies or other passions in life?

I understand being overwhelmed, I was too when I started OMSCS. My biggest piece of advice is: try to relax. Enjoy your free time while you can, I definitely felt burnt out at the end. Take it one class at a time, and just prep for that class. If you feel weak in math, maybe take a class with minimal math prereqs as your first class to get a feel for the program.

Two from academia and one from work. I asked two engineering professors that taught classes with programming assignments, so while not strictly CS, they were able to speak to my ability to write software. If you don’t have that, you can do well in a few CS classes at a community college and professors are usually happy to write you a rec
