Some people hate on no load lifters. Since there are no load lifters, the pack compresses and shrinks to be very small, especially in the 40L size. I use the 40L as my main daypack, and do not have issues getting it small enough.

Hey Chris, what a great review and testament to ice breaker quality. I was wondering if another New Zealand company like MacPac would have the same quality as they have a sale at the moment of 30% of for 3 or more items. I am a student so that deal seems attractive.

Hi there! Unfortunately we don't sell MacPac so it isn't a brand we are familiar with quality-wise. We would recommend finding a store near you that sells MacPac and a store that sells Icebreaker so you can feel the products and try them on to compare :)

We would all love an updated ground chair. Lighter and more colours like dark olive/ranger green. I love my beige and black one. Not a fan of blue and yellow legs tbh. It’s not really low profile.

Since I don’t use my boots so often, and they’re not so dirty (yet 4 months has passed) would you recommend using only the waterproof spray or shall I clean and use the conditioner as well?

Hi Tom, very clear and demonstrative video. Could you expand a bit on the strap that is on your thigh brace to provide a 3 point attachment instead of just 2. I have the NRS straps and a Recon raft which has the attachment point for the 3rd point. Thanks again, very good vid.

I have the large splitting axe and the outdoor axe. The splitter is a beast and can handle pretty much anything, the long handle provides a wider arc when swinging, which delivers more force than the standard splitter. Ideal for heavy homestead use, but way too heavy to carry if travelling. The outdoor is a lightweight general purpose axe that has a slight splitting profile for kindling and medium logs, as well as a protective collar like the splitting axe range. Being so light and well balanced it is also useful for fine tasks such as butchering and fine detail whittling, and the shoulder is small enough to be held in the palm of the hand, enabling the blade to be used effectively as a knife replacement. The best thing for me is it is compatible with the Fjallraven Barents pro trousers when worn on a belt, the handle fits perfectly into the small double ended tube pocket on the leg, keeping it from flapping around when on the move.

Hi Chris, we’re now on O’Cebriero as I type - over 600km down & under 200km until we reach Santiago. Then it’s on to Finestere & Muxia ! Talking footwear is tricky here on the Camino. We are carrying our own packs the whole way so my Lowa Z8-s goretex have been utterly perfect for me. Way lighter than my Lowa Tibets but with almost as much ankle support. Not one single blister and my feet are always dry. My wife’s Lowa Mauria Evo GTX Ws have been perfect for her. We’ve also used “Injini” toe socks - they are essential. Because of the uber light weight of trail runners, people swear by low cut Altras & Hokas. But remember 99% of people are also shipping their bags and carrying a very light day pack rather than their full 15kg pack. Most trail runners are not at all waterproof but dry overnight allegedly. For me, wet feet are a recipe for blisters.

Goretex boots make your feet sweat and blister if you do any real strenuous, longer hikes in them, especially in hotter weather. It's always better to go non goretex. The best serious hiking boots are still all cowhide boots with a 3/4 nylon shank. The Alico 'Summit' boot is about perfect, it is made to fit after market insoles and it's made in italy by an old boot maker that knows what they're doing and is cheaper than many of the modern trail runners. They break in fast and are extremely durable. I live in colorado, hike often, and i am 7 years in on a pair that look like they will go at least another 7 right now. Nothing gives you the kind of support and protection like old school, cowhide leather boots and a good custom insole do. I have been through probably 12 pair of different high dollar boots over the last 32 years, including scarpa, garmont, asolo, la sportiva, and many more i can't remember, and i also did a lot of trail running in trail runners and some hiking in trail runners. Trail runners and light weight boots are good for lightweight, totally on-trail hiking, and then only on clean, perfectly manicured trails that don't have scree fields, or other sharp rocks, etc. i highly suggest you wear the proper footwear for the trail you're hiking... It makes me wince when i see youtubers hiking the Continental divide trail in sneakers and the like... That is not smart imo, and is definitely not a comfortable way to go... You need protection from sharp rocks, you need the rigidity to side kick or toe kick steps into hard snow or dirt, you need that rigidity as well to edge on small rock ledges, and the ankle support is excellent for carrying a heavier pack, even if you're going ultra light. Just some words of wisdom from an older middle aged, pretty experienced hiker, trailrunner and alpine climber... Take it or leave it.

I just bought the Moki Lite for 335 + 50 shipping + tax. I think XPD is the way if you ever want to hike with the packraft but with the sales going on 40% off or something? I figured I'd get the Moki Lite. In the future maybe I'll get another ultralight packable packradt but this will be perfect to add when I go overlanding aka car camping.

I love my petzl actik core 450. It has been my primary headlamp for many years now. I use it mainly for hunting, camping and mechanical repair work. For intense task work I use the highest setting and unfortunately the 1.5-2hrs duration is usually not enough to last the duration of use. After that time it kicks down to low or medium then lasts quite a bit longer. After getting used to high for 2hrs it is annoying when it kicks down. So I recently got a Nitecore NU43 to be my primary and the Petzl will be my secondary. It will be perfect for that. The Nitecore weighs only 41g more and has a 3400 mAh battery vs the petzl core which is 1250 mAh. The advertised run time on this thing is 10hr at 600 lumens or 15hr at 300 lumens or 29hr at 100 lumens. And is IP68 water resistant. Crazy specs... I will definitely have way more light for the full duration of my activities now. The petzl actic core will be a PERFECT secondary… compact and lightweight and durable. Cheers!

I have always wanted this kind of tent. Good amount of space and that view opening in the front looks lovley. Quite lite too. Can you compress the tent bag even more? or would that damage the tent? and how much do you think the fabric withstand? im scared that if a buy a SL tent, and if i manage to tighten the tent so much that the fabric tears. I want a tent that can withstand all kinds of weather and wind, but then i think that, I don't really go on a weekend trip where there is a storm. So I'm mostly afraid of ruining the tent because I know the fabric is very thin. what do you think? Greetings from Mikkel 16 years old, Norway.
@tomsoutdoorsgearguide

Hey Mikkel, it can be compressed further without damage. While the tent material is superlight, they are still made with durability to withstand the outdoors.

The Vidda Pro non-ventilated also have one more belt loop around the waist compared to the ventilated. I have both pants but definatly prefer the non-ventilated. Better comfort and the pockts are better placed in my opinion. I 186cm tall/ 80 kg and size 50 Long is a perfect fit. I also have the Vidda Pro Lite. Same pants as the Pro non-ventilated but in a much lighter and more breathable G-1000 fabric. Excellent in warmer conditions.

This is like comparing a Jeep Wrangler to a Suzuki Samurai. What's that Aussie saying? 'Some lures are made to catch more fishermen than fish.' It's "Ultralight VS UltraRIGHT". UL packs aren't purchased, they're rented. They are judged by how many miles one can get with them on a trail where as something like a more traditional pack is judged by years. I have nothing against UL packs or gear, but let's face it, they're just for <1% of the backpacking/hiking community. 99% of us mere mortals would benefit from using a real pack with real comfort & real suspensions and if someone is only carrying 10lbs of gear, then they don't need a $500 backpack. Their kid's school backpack could carry 10lbs! 😂
