I'd love to grow fall/winter crops. I live in the Hudson Valley area of NY zone 6ish and I have a small greenhouse that I hope to use for this purpose and wonder if the timing for starting these plants is the same. I have had an awful problem with bugs this year that attacked my broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cucumbers, eggplant and butter cup squash that I've never experienced in the 25+ years I've been growing my small garden so I'm afraid to put leafy greens out where they will be magnets for crop-eating bugs. Any tips for successful fall gardening would be appreciated.

I have a friend that’s a vegetarian and the proud recipient of any zucchini that I’ve missed. She makes vegetarian crab cakes with them. No, I haven’t tried them but I’m happy to contribute 😅

This isn't the amount of direct sunlight onions require, right? Is it just the length of the day? Because I don't have a spot in my garden that gets 10-12 hours of direct sunlight, 8 hours is the maximum I get during high summer.
@StoneyAcresGardening13 сағат бұрын
@poppyblue1512 correct, this is just day length, not direct sun.

Gonna love watching how this comes together. Every year it seems i add another raised bed. And want to experiment with growing something new. 5 years ago i put down cardboard and then got a truck load of woodchips. Then built my raised beds ontop. This past spring i just refreshed it with more woodchips.

Can I do this in a storage bin?

1) My neighbor has a raised bed garden. He uses big pavers between the rows to walk on. 2) Is it best to have a raised bed garden or till up and plant directly into the soil like I do. I grow tomatoes 🍅 peppers 🫑 pumpkins 🎃 for a roadside stand in front of my house. 3) I’ve been trying to get my cousin to put in a garden. They live in the country with lots of trees and the only sunny spot is to the east of their house over looking their pond which is their leach field. Not sure if you want to fill up a leach field to plant a garden or not but I would think that that would be a perfect spot for them for a container garden?
@StoneyAcresGardeningКүн бұрын
In ground gardens are nearly always cheaper and easier to start. But in my brothers case the ground in there area is excessively ROCKY. I mean it is REALLY bad. So it is easier to just add raised beds. I don't know what a leach field is so I can't help you there. Containers are always harder to garden in, but not impossible.
@texillini1Күн бұрын
@@StoneyAcresGardening a Leech field is where the waste goes for you septic tank. City sewers don’t run in the country, so they have a septic tank.

They also have chickens. I figured that they could use that manure in the garden as well. She thinks it too hot. I said then just throw it in a compost pile.

Is there different types of popcorn ? I wonder, the popcorn this year seems to be very dry and tough after you pop it. My brother said the same thing,he orders his popcorn from a different place, rather than here in Canada. Is there different grades of popcorn ? and which areas grow the best popcorn ? You seem very knowledgeable on corns, so maybe you know the answer ?
@StoneyAcresGardeningКүн бұрын
I think it would just be the variety of popcorn you chose. We grow a couple of different varieties and one of the varieties we grow is also a little "tougher". We really like yellow hulless it produces a nice light popped kernel. But it is hybrid so you can't save the seeds to plant next year.

I understand. But keep in mind potatoes aren't fruit, they are underground stem swellings, not the same as fruit. In fact every once in a great while the flowers on a potato will actually grow a fruit (which is poisonous)

Are you supposed to move the mulch aside when you water, then move it back? Otherwise wouldn't the water just sit on the Mulan and evaporate?
@berniekirk13975 күн бұрын
I have been using grass clippings for a few years. I do not wait for it to dry, I do get some matting. I leave some space around the plant roots, for water to seep in when I water, I hand water, no pipes or drip hoses. I like that it reduces splashing and weeds. I have a lot of clay, and feel that tilling in the grass, loosens the soil.

There's something weird about spinach. I find it hard to germinate, hard to get it to grow, and the one spinach plant that did germinate and grow is pathetic. I can't imagine it making it through a winter, even in a cold frame.

Nice class. I live in West-Central IL. I grow tomatoes 🍅 , peppers 🫑 and pumpkins 🎃 and squash to sell on my roadside in front of my house along the highway. Let’s say I were to go to Harbor Freight and buy one of their greenhouses and start growing my own plants from seeds; would it be wise to then create raised beds inside of the greenhouse for extended crops to sell or use for ourselves? How long of harvest would I get out of a greenhouse compared to your cold frames or hoop houses?

I’m surprised you recommended direct seeding spinach at this time of year because it is difficult to get it to germinate in anything over 80 degrees. One trick I used this spring was to pre-sprout the seeds using the plate germination method and I had good success. I’ve also had pretty good luck transplanting seedlings. I’m wondering what issues you had. What I find with spinach overall is because it finicky to germinate, I make sure to always plant way more than I will ultimately need.
