I see a lot of comments about this song mentioning new marriages. It works as a wedding song, no doubt. We're a couple of days away from our 30th anniversary. This song takes on a whole new meaning, having spent more than half of my life with that woman.

Wife and I used to perform this as a cover with slight alterations in lyrics to make it more personal. She being a Latina, when i would sing, "cusses in Spanish when she shaves her legs," it always brought a roar of laughter.

Just want you to know the good news of the Gospel. The bad news is that you and I (everyone) are sinners. And since God is Holy He doesn’t put up with sin. So sin leads to hell. The good news is God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins on the cross. This means Jesus paid the debt we owed but couldn’t pay. So if one repents and places faith (trust) in Jesus Christ they can be assured of heaven. I love you and so does God.

My wife and I walked outside of the Akron Civic Theater one Sunday in the mid 90’s. It was mid day and no one was on the street. This guy passed us on the empty street. I said to my wife I think that’s John Prine! After a few seconds I turned and yelled JOHN! He turned and walked back towards us. After a few seconds of hello and introductions he looked at us and said. I can’t find a way to get in to the theater. We helped him find the back entrance where Arlo Guthrie had just pulled in. They were co headlining the show that night. Some things you never forget no matter how small they may seem.

Makes me think of my friend Gordon Kawasaki who served with the 101st Airborne in Nam. Came back disillusioned with the War. Take a hill fall back, take a hill fall back violent no sense conflict. Came back with a monkey on his back he couldn't shake and purposely overdosed 4th of July 1988. R I.P. to all those who served and suffered.

I discovered John a few weeks after he died and watched the NPR Tiny Desk Concert with the 4 songs done acoustically. He was very old by then, but wow those 4 songs were very good, including this one.

"It's a mighty mean and a dreadful sorrow" should come right after "Get left so far behind". I'm not being persnickety. I perform this song and I feel every word of it. I love, present tense, John Prine. I pray that the person administering this website accepts this brief note in that same spirit of love.

There have been many times I’ve listened to this song and thought, “What an absolute masterpiece.” But then there are times I can hear it and think, “Goddamnit, it should be against the law to write something so utterly heartbreaking…” It’s a message of compassion and human connection. But it hits different when you’re the one yearning for connection.

His methods of writing his songs might have been different , but boy oh boy John . It worked . You were unique and one of a kind . The world got so many gifts from you . Hope you know that we got you. This kind of talent only comes around occasionally . I m so glad I discovered his gifts early ,and got to live them and enjoy them
