I'm from the area and still live here. There is a history of many mineral deposits including including lead, iron ore, and copper. I suspect contaminated water plays a role in the gradual decline into madness, which is how they would interpret cognitive decline. Lines up with lead poisoning, among other possibilities. I believe there are also spiritual influences, especially after decades (even centuries) of trespass and vandalism but let's not ignore the elements and science of that environment.

I think you need to do more than quickly list these places or items. If you told a story about 1 place, I think people would be more interested. These go by almost too fast to absorb... People like stories. The story of some of these places or just one story about someone's experience there, would capture people's imaginations a lot more.
