I can't say what he's using, but cotton paper is the best imo because it can stand more washes and water, so cotton hot press is a good choice. However if the goal is to try out or produce some work for yourself you can do this with regular watercolor paper, as far as i can see he's doing 2 layers that's not a problem, maybe 3 layers i am not sure. If you work with a lot of water such as wet in wet techniques or going to do more then 3 layers then you need cotton as it can withstand more abuse without turning into pulp 😉

@@Tony-cj6jy thanks for the reply. I am using Arches hot press currently after trying a whole bunch of cotton and non cotton papers. Im pretty sure hes using hot press cotton as well and he seems to be working fairly dry and when I do that the paper doesnt take it that well. So now Im using more water and just layer it more to get the real dark values. I kinda feel scammed though that theres like a hundred non cotton papers but basically if you really wanna do solid art in watercolor you need cotton paper. I got a bunch of papers laying around now which I kinda use but now I wish I went straight to cotton.

@@TommyClemenza273 I use Arches too. Now I think about it I use the other papers mostly outside when drawing from observation so it probably dries better, maybe you can turn them into sketch books for travel or to practice observation skills. I also use non arches to make new year cards or other cards, people enjoy something handmade.
