I need to get this off my chest, when I was a kid, I think this was factorio 0.13 or 0.15, I thought the idea of using automation was absolutely stupid and there was no reason to deal with it. Every. single. thing. I made in that Giant base was entirely hand crafted, EVERYTHING. I MADE 4 NUCLEAR REACTORS FROM RAW MATERIALS. I LEFT MY PC RUNNING WHEN I SLEPT TO CRAFT THEM, I HAND CRAFTED EVERYTHING NEEDED TO LAUNCH 1 ROCKET. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫, my second play through I gave automation a try and thought it was alright.

I forget from the last video when you set up the lab, but did you ever consider using cargo wagons as wide chests to put the science packs into before the labs?
@MichaelHendriks
@MichaelHendriks 2 күн бұрын
The first 2 columns of labs have the same function (a little less wide, but the "lab chests" come already preset with 43 dedicated individual science pack slots)

I have difficulties with blues and greens but I'm surprised the color gradient looks correct to me. I do use one of the colorblind filters but they don't have one for my specific deficiency. Fun fact, majority of humans only have red, green, and blue cones in their eyes so yellow is just brain magic

I tested a cargo train loader setup. Had a science train basically. Works very efficiently. Can share a blue print if you would like? Second option. Have each belt load into it's own lab. Have a line of labs just for loading and move everything to the right. Can even make a nice looking loop at the end with stack inserters going down and have a line of labs for actual science below the loader labs. Uses ur triangle lab loading but simplies it to efficiently working :) can share blue print on this as well :) even if u would just like to see it

My thought is just Why not use the left hand side of the "loop" to directly load from the belts, and then run them around to the last lab which doesn't loop? Doesn't really seem to be much benefit of a loop at all, the key here is can the labs move research from the start to the end fast enough. And i imagine stack inserters could.
@motorbyclist
@motorbyclist 3 күн бұрын
the beaconed labs in the left side of the loop would never do any research that way, and he wants the whole loop researching. He discusses this when talking about how it's essentially a pyramid layout. As for the feeder labs, I guess if he got rid of the feeder labs then he'd need a gap between every 3 belts and ruin the rainbow, and I think he's simply not considered using a row of cargo wagons in place of those feeder labs (he comments on this as if he would need to feed all 40+ science into each wagon which he clearly wouldn't) Agree though there was a bunch of ways to lay this out to prevent the issue of science perpetually doing laps of the labs, including filter stack inserters, or just using some yellow inserters to act as a brake to let the science backfill the loop while still allowing it to get to the feeder labs
@MichaelHendriks

I set my sights on a rainbow belt feeding into the labs without much clutter. If i can get 30SPM this way all other optimizations and vatiants are just unnecessary

@@motorbyclist I suppose my thought is that because essentially all you're doing is moving Science along a line of labs, what you can then do is just extend that line to the right and then basically just create another whole loop that terminates right before it starts looping. You can then beacon that entire loop and get full efficiency that way.

2 ideas: - There's no benefit to a science pack doing more than 1 loop, so use filter inserters to blacklist science packs revisiting where they first joined the loop. Then you can have stack inserters all the way through. - More simply, have stack inserts all the way through, but at one point have a yellow inserter to let things back up

Cars on a belt is the best method for science distribution. Dead simple, will handle any number of science packs. My base is easily feeding 2700 spm on a single yellow belt. This rainbow waterfall looks really cool though.

Why circuit controlled if you can just use cars on a belt? There is no default "best" solution for many factorio problems, and often it depends on your other goals, like in this case, a rainbow belt that looks nice
