Thank you for making this. Maybe I'm just the right kind of nerd to think this is a cool fact. My little hometown was where the first flights happened for one of the most famous planes in history. And no one knows about it

Orlando is my hometown. I'm in aviation buff too. This is one of my favorite facts about my hometown. Nobody knows this. These days hardly anybody knows what the X1 is without briefly describing it and everyone has probably seen a video of it but doesn't know the designation. But when I tell them, hey did you know it was first flown in Orlando? They're like what the hell are you talking about??!! I love it. Even growing up when I did Orlando was kind of backwater. They didn't even show us on weather maps until I was in my late teens. It was just Jacksonville Tampa and Miami. We were just a hole. We're a hole that flew the X1!!!

I just went to space camp and got this model at the gift shop. I have put together many advanced and a few expert but this is my first master level. I was very skittish about getting this model but now I am not really worried about assembly, I am worried about paint. I will use the techniques used in this video and paint like the Saturn 1b they have at the space and rocket center. Thank you so much for making this

I've never used an ignitor plug. Instead, I secure my ignitors with a small, rolled up ball of recovery wadding, pressed in firmly with the end of a launch rod. Works perfectly.
@joelevy667618 күн бұрын
That's real "old school" technique: I did it that way during my first foray into model rockets, back in the 1970s. We also could use a bit of masking tape to pin the leads against the engine wall. (Back in the hobby as a retiree. I like the igniter plugs just fine.)

First flight: no engine because Curtis-Wright hadn’t finished making it work yet. As usual, the nose gear collapsed on landing and severely damaged the aircraft

You mention the fin decals are easy to screw up--you can say that again! You have placed them on the wrong fins according to the instructions, They go on the alternate fins (between what you are calling the quads). But it gets worse: the instructions show using the quad white stripe decal twice and the dual white stripe decal twice!! So at this point maybe I will just go with what you did!
@rocketaero2 ай бұрын
Peter Alway's drawings in his magisterial work "Rockets of the World" were used to guide the installation of the fin markings, backed up by photo and video references. The placement in this tutorial is accurate.

you did not install the wire anchor in the service module; is that because there is no intent to fly the model?
@rocketaero2 ай бұрын
Correct, I did not install the anchor. I find that it is far simpler to loop the recovery harness line around the Command Module instead, attaching the snap swivel back onto the line. Very easy, and no non-scale loop protruding from the model.

MY plane was a spare for the last launch of the day . sitting behind the Island was this vigilante running waiting to be taxied out . i was down 2 spots from him . Maintenance , Troubleshooters my line chief were waving at me and pointing that the vigilante was pulling out. I waved them off thinking I could brace myself when he turned and the exhaust would blow by easy WRONG he got hung up on the number 4 wire gave his plane a little boost to get out sent me flying down the deck took every person that took cover to stop me from rolling over the side .

I had the Centuri one in the 70s. Took long time to save $$. Long time and care to build. Fins were a b@@@ to say the least and I had issues with the vinyl wrap for the capsule. I built the 3 engine cluster and maiden flight using C6-3s, triple checked everything. And lainchtime. Dang if one motor didn’t ignite and I ended up lawn dart (asphalt actually). Was crushed. Still my fav kit and own 3 of them noe waiting to build one. Just want to convert to 3 engine again.

@acestillwell985 ай бұрын
My favorite fact about the Little Joe II is that one flight, the one used at the beginning of the video funny enough, had an actual failure and was destroyed in flight. In the clip you showed, it starts to spin. That wasn't planned. They crossed a control wire from the guidance system, so when it tried to correct itself in flight, it just spun. The spinning got worse and worse until the metal skin around the tanks ripped off from aero forces and the tanks started to cave in on itself. During these tests, the abort system would've just been triggered by a timer. The main goal of the tests at this time wasn't to see if the automatic abort system would work, it was to see if the capsule could be safely pulled away, but the abort system was fully installed regardless. This time, however, the abort system detected the catastrophic failure and triggered itself. Some of the engineers there said it was the most valuable test they conducted in the entire Little Joe program, because it was a real-world failure.

I am guessing this same technique will do for the Maxi Brute Honest John Fins as well. How does the rocket fly with the added weight? Do you have a video showing how you did the improved exhaust veins?
@michaelc68175 ай бұрын
A nice variety of modelling tools and techniques used here. You make this look easy, however, a less experienced modeler like me will have to refer back to this video more than a few times to learn and replicate some of those techniques. The finished product looks great. Now, are you going to launch it??

I am not a fan of using contact cement for wraps! Much better in my opinion to use a good epoxy with a long cure time so you position the wraps perfectly. Just dap it on the wrap lightly with a foam brush on the high points which make contact with the body tube. And use strong rubber bands to apply tension over the wrap while it dries. Wooden rods placed next to the seam help keep the seam from lifting up. Lightly sand the wrap to promote adhesion.
