Remember that Leigh’s character is theatrical- Blanche Du Bois is a poser, trying to affect the old world charm of the fallen southern gentry. It’s not Leigh being ‘stagey’, it’s Leigh being Blanche. But I agree with all comments re: Brando. It’s a quality you can’t train. He’s completely present but also quite disciplined in terms of working for the camera blocking. The scene is beautifully directed in terms of movement/ low camera for him, high camera for her highlighting just how vulnerable she is. His body is beautifully fit without looking overworked. His delivery is next level - very fresh and real. Making dialogue- especially dialogue from a stage play (these are Tennessee Williams words) sound ‘real’ and unforced is hard. He makes it look like second nature. Beautiful.

My drama teacher once said “Watch what happens when a child or animal wanders onto the stage: It is hypnotizing, the audience can’t keep their eyes off them. The reason is that ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.” That was Marlon Brando…he was dangerous because you never knew what he was going to do. The role of Stanley was never supposed to be a big part of the play. Marlon Brando stole the show every night, always experimenting, surprising not only the audience…but his fellow actors too. He was told by the director that he needed to enunciate better, that it was sometimes hard to understand him. Brando didn’t change a thing, insisting that men like Stanley are always difficult to understand in every sense.

I feel Like I’m watching old Hollywood. ‘acting’ in her Vs new Hollywood ‘method’. His performance is so modern. 😍

Brando was new Hollywood method though. He was widely known for popularizing method acting, one of its pioneers.

When you delve deeper into his life, you will find that he is an exceptional person and very intelligent at the same time. Throughout his life, he had bad luck in relationships with women because of his past with his family. He suffered a lot. Only one woman, Jill Banner who was the love of his life, she sadly died in a car accident, after which Marlon went into isolation until the day he died

Brando went beyond just thinking about his performance he really inhibited the characters thoughts and feelings. You can tell this scene Stanleys checking out Blanche as well as presenting himself, it says so much about the character without dialogue because it tells the kind of guy who views women soley as sexual prospects even his wifes sister
