Not ideal ; over starboard right through the field ! M Sailing on till there is enough room is maybe better ; less chance on a collision. Besides that it will cost you a lot of speed and places in the field. Best start ; over starboard crossing the field ( right in front) , tracking right on top of the field , and try to maintain your position till the next buoy 👍

If you think this was hectic you should have been in the J109 Europeans, there was a whole bunch more shouting going on at the windward marks

My racing days started with my father on a Wayfarer and from there I went to thistles lightenings and ensigns a few dragons and R boats too old sailors on the Great Lakes will know what I’m talking about went to quite a few nationals with one championship a few years later I got my 6 pack then 100 ton, then masters once it’s in your blood it never leaves you might not participate but you can enjoy the raw energy and excitement I remember the around the islands race on Lake Erie we had the right of way and a boat (Cal 25) tried to duck us didn’t quite work for them my dad was at the helm and we knocked their outboard off not on purpose said my dad I still don’t believe him he was a very competitive SOB lol

Ah the irony of missing the mark by 2 boat lengths to leeward being buried at the back of the fleet and still yelling starboard and protest at a bunch of people. Next time find some clear air and concentrate on hitting the layline and getting a clean hoist...

Yeah, from the clip and what i remember, while i was trimming, the tiller was going from centerline to leeward. We were traveling at such a low speed at that exact moment i believe i was trying to bring the bow up at i was trimming in coming up below the boat on the inside. And once i got the bow moving i commited to a nice even round up and accelerated out 😅

As a former J24 World Champion I know that the further back the Fleet you are, the more useless the sailors and random the rule observance. The GBR boat came up on Port with no rights on the inside Boat. The sandwiched mouthy bearded wonder had no idea and should have called much earlier. Mr Shouty also had 3 crew in the Genoa slots after rounding when 2 should be below deck . Generally and comprehensively useless....

Bearded Wonders* and idk about you but it seemed to me that we had the best escape from that rounding. Also I did not get fouled nor fouled anyone. I defended my position. And if you were on a former World Champion crew you would know that the front of the pack is much more aggressive, and just as loud as the back of the pack

@@OUTRAGEOUSSAILING It's super common to end up "yelling" at people at leeward mark roundings. It's all part of the game and no hard feelings (usually) once you get off the water. These people commenting have no idea.
@OUTRAGEOUSSAILING
@OUTRAGEOUSSAILING 2 жыл бұрын
@@blinginlike3p0 Yeah I totally understand where they're coming from though. The thing is that the atmosphere at a regatta like this is totally different from normal racing so tensions will get high. We were sponsored with a boat and a brand new set of sails and paid our way (lots of $$$) to be there so the pressure was crazy. We did end up top Youth boat in the world though 😉

Why weight on the leeward side?
@OUTRAGEOUSSAILING
@OUTRAGEOUSSAILING 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Luis! So, in this situation there are 2 reasons I still had my trimmer to leeward. 1) so he can call out boats and positions below us and 2) If I needed to accelerate quickly I could snap the main and the whole boat would lurch forward half a boat length to secure a position... Once we were established it was weight up and go!

This is an example of why you need to know fiberglass and Gel-Kote repair if you race. All contact appeared to be minor “love taps” with perhaps only cosmetic damage (except for egos) not worth protesting or engaging in confrontation post race at the bar 🌞🏴‍☠️

While I broadly agree, in some situations in order to remain competitive (especially at a World Championship event) you have to defend your position when you know you have rights. While I was speaking loud and yelled once or twice I did not spew profanities nor did I bully anyone on the course (I even said please multiple times😅). I defended my position to the best of my ability and did not foul anyone on the rounding. Also, coming into a leeward gate with 15 boats at the same time in a very competitive fleet is incredibly stressful. As you can hear I wasn't the only skipper voicing his opinion 🤣

@@OUTRAGEOUSSAILING In my opinion you failed to stay clear from the GER. guys from GRB were like, USA is giving us room and we are taking it. your verbal fight should had been with GBR not the GER than had rights on you.
@OUTRAGEOUSSAILING

@@igbc176 In this situation GER was required to make a seamanlike rounding on this mark so I was only required to give them enough room to round, they did not have the rights to take as much as they wanted. As we did not touch and they did not hit the mark I gave them enough room. No protests were called or filed so just some friendly yelling in the end 😇 sorry I took so long to respond, always open for a conversation
