While it might be technically possible to run a trawl at 1000 meters (about 550 fathoms), the boat needed to overcome that much drag would be huge. Next question would be why do it? Most marketable fish live in the 30 - 50 fathom range.

Life feeds on life to survive. It is more efficient for me to catch enough fish to feed 10.000 one boat people than 10,000 people going out in individual boats to catch a fish to eat. Even if they were to go out in kayaks they would still use at a minimum 5000 gallons of gas to get the the ocean VS 150 gallons that I use on a trip to go fishing. Before you label my fishery destructive in any way you should consider the real science and math behind the numbers.

As well as some species of whale, a few years ago I read that others would become extinct because of over fishing, you have a living to make and if I made my living in the same way as you I would probably think in a similar way. For the sake of argument, animals have been going extinct for millions of years. It is the cycle of natural selection. Someday we may make ourselves extinct, but that too is just part of the cycle of life. For now, We can only worry about where our next meal will come from. I'm just doing what I have to do to survive.
