"Juice" in Scotland also means canned/bottled soft drinks. My English friends laughed at me for that haha.

I've learned a whole lot about pitch accent just from watching your excellent videos. Now it's something that I instinctively listen for when watching anime or hearing someone speak Japanese. And I try to mimic the intonation and the way Japanese people pronounce words, in order to sound more natural. It's working well for me. I really appreciate all these videos you make, they are incredibly helpful. 😊

Pitch accent wasn't pushed in our studies in college (where I nearly minored in the language.) Seeing it show up in Renshuu was like, "Oh? What's this?" But when I tried it out loud, I was already stressing the common words I likely will never forget in the correct manner. Instead of complaining or focusing in pitch accent, listening should become the top priority. It's how I am starting out in Mandarin, which makes a more significant difference if you don't get the tone right. I think until I am comfortable with introducing myself with name, age, occupation, and some family members, I won't look at a textbook or the writing. That seems like it would be enough to cover most, if not all, of the sounds and tones.

English is literally not difficult
@matoikazamaki9522Күн бұрын
Say that to a chinese or japanese person. Difficulty in a language is subjective, it depends on how similar it is to your native one. English isn't my first language and I can tell you that irregular verbs and phrasal verbs are a nightmare to learn.
@user-gt4gs5xu6sКүн бұрын
@@matoikazamaki9522 we don't have tones, or characters to memorize and our language is phonetic
@matoikazamaki9522Күн бұрын
@@user-gt4gs5xu6s You can't seriously think english is a phonetic language... I mean have you even taken a look at the word "phonetic"? If english truly were, you would've wrote it as "fonetik". There are 5 ways to write the sound [k] -> c (as in cap), ck (as in lack), k (as in park), ch (as in monarch) and q (as in question). There are words that look similar but have a completely different reading. tough and dough aren't pronounced the same way despite having 80% of the same letters in the same order, tough, though, thought and through have similar spelling but are all pronounced differently. "read" isn't pronounced the same way in "I will read tomorrow" and "I read yesterday". English doesn't have tones but has stress accent and sounds that are inexistent in many languages such as the english R sound or the TH sound. English doesn't have thousands of characters but it has so many different spelling for the same sounds. English has close to 200 irregular verbs when japanese has 2. English has 16 tenses when some other languages have 3. English has phrasal verbs like get up, get down, get off, get on, get in, get together, get along, get through. If english is your first language it makes sense that you don't consider those as particularly difficult but it also means that you can't possibly fathom how difficult it is to learn as a second language, and especially coming from chinese or japanese...

Maybe I want to provide a little support to the comment. The commenter said 'overcomplicate'. As in overcomplicating the learning process, not overcomplicating the language itself. Actually I don't disagree. Don't learn or study it, acquire it.

My native language is Spanish, I know English and started learning Japanese this year. The pronunciation is very "easy" in the sense that the sounds of most vowels and consonants are similar to Spanish sounds. Yes, the pitch is a challenge, but when you're learning an entire language, expecting everything to be easy is just not realistic. Besides, it depends on your motivation. For me, learning languages brings me joy, so to me this is a hobby that I take very seriously and respectfully, but it's also fun and challenging. Also, why would this person state that Japanese is the most difficult language as a fact? From their perspective maybe it's true, for me perhaps French or German would be way more difficult because the sound system is very different from Spanish.

According to me, the Chinese Language is more complicated than the Japanese. In the Japanese Language, stress is there but compared to Chinese, it's a little bit. When comes to studying Chinese, stress to too complicated.

Practice your listening every day ( especially if you are just started ) Practice make perfection! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Repetition make everything easy Like she said... Embrace it!! Don't complain! You have to create to yourself a mentality that.... " i want to learn like if I'm a native Japanese ". In other words... No comparison with your own language! Just open your heart to the " new world" Of learning a new language etc Just open you hearts and minds Everything become more easy if you truly embrace with will and the right mentality 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 頑張って下さい皆様 日本語の学習というのは素晴らしいことですよ❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Every day I feel like I'm making progress and I don't have to force myself to memorize grammar or vocabulary since I'm basically just doing everything I already love, but in Japanese. Best of all, it's totally free! Google "Refold language learning", give it a shot and let me know what you think. Might be a game changer

Thanks Fumi Sensei; It’s so true ! I was just in Tokyo station and I wanted to find the Imperial Palace quickly (I didn’t have much time before my meeting) and so I asked the information desk “皇居はどの出口ですか” And the staff replied “こちらは東京です“ And I answered, ”すみません、皇居をさげしていますですけど“ And again “これは東京駅です” And I gave up. But I found it eventually, feeling rather dejected that my accent was so strong that Koukyo sounded like Tokyo. 😢 So I told my Japanese colleague that I was in Tokyo station looking for “Koukyo” and she asked…. “What is that?” I could have died right then and there 😭 😆 So yes, you’re quite right Fumi Sensei

Stress accent: I bet you have seen Harry Potter? You know that famous scene: "It's LeviOOOOsa, not LeviosAAA". Putting stress on the O or the A in this case. Pitch accent a higher or lower voice pitch, (dark sound or light sound). "Hashi" is a good example word, because if you start with a high pitch and go lower, it means chopsticks. And if you start with a low pitch and go higher, it means bridge... 🙂 I hope that helped!

I know this is a very late comment, and I think I can't post links.. but if you search "yoru ni kakeru japanese english stereo" you'll find a video with each version in opposite ears. It's very confusing for me, as someone who speaks both languages. But, it's confusing in a good way! I was also very impressed when I heard the English version. One reason this ends up being 空耳 is related to a concept in songs called "hooks". A hook is something that catches your attention, sets pacing, or otherwise highlights certain syllables in the song. While most syllables are not similar, the "hooks" from the original song have been copied as close as possible to give the feeling that you're still hearing the original lyrics (Japanese). It's kind of like how speakers of a language merge or blend words together when speaking, but others still understand them - it's because the important syllables to understand what each word is still sound clear. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9-Zg8Kj2eC5Z2w.html
