im sure people can set up a camera, it would help if you make a video, and give the step by step way to remove the SD memory card and where you put the card, to view the animals or wildlife..

the one outside BnM? If so, we saw a few trout there last week! This footage was taken over a year ago and many fish get swept out of the reach during floods and struggle to get back to where they were due to barriers to migration such as weirs.

I remember back in the 60's a small ship breaking it's moorings and getting stuck across the Dutch river at the old Goole bridge. I seem to think it may have broken it's back. I'm sure there will be some articles somewhere to clarify it. I wonder where all the spoil ended up, as you said it's probably 20mts wide and over the length is a lot of soil. Keep up the good work, I really enjoy your reports

As you say the Don is a fascinating river. Have known it all my life. Its transformation over the last few decades is remarkable. It now displays a natural beauty (which was sometimes hidden beneath those several feet of foam you mentioned.) And its fascination is deepened by the industrial history that lingers over its banks.

Keep the videos coming. I often look at my garden and wonder how it would look if the Dutchman hadn't altered the course. I'm almost certain that it flowed through the rear, over the veg plot and out of the village towards the Trent. I can't prove it 100% because what map's I have seen are very old and not too precise. Keep up the good work

Can we not plant willow to protect our banks from erosion?
@earthmother677 ай бұрын
I've been in Aldwarke for 8 years and have only seen two salmon trying to get up the weir. The first one was 4 years ago and unfortunately there were 3 fishermen in the water in waders and two standing on the screw trying to catch it.
@doncatchmentriverstrust6 ай бұрын
Salmon will only jump if they are struggling to get over a barrier. Where there is a fish pass salmon should hopefully find the enterance to the pass easily and swim up it rather than jump at the weir.
@johnfrench96087 ай бұрын
Great project but frustrating we have to try and go round these structures rather than just remove them.
@doncatchmentriverstrust6 ай бұрын
If removal is possible we will always endevour to do this as it is the best for fish migration and habitat. Where removal is difficult due to the weir having a function, heritage implications or a cost-to-benefit imbalance, a fish pass solution will be sought but we agree that this is not a perfect solution.

I live on what would have been the banks of the Don had Vermuyden not drained this area, in fact I'm not far from Meredyke where the Don fed into the Trent. Would the Salmon have used this as a way of navigating back in the day. Great video and a great project
@doncatchmentriverstrust7 ай бұрын
Hello - that's right, the salmon used to get into the catchment via the Trent, and had to find their way again from the Ouse after the new Don channel was created!

Too many Avian preditors to be much of a success imo. A hatchery would be the game changer. Large numbers of Smolts are required for a few to get through. The EA usually says No😢

We are hoping that salmon will continue to naturally recolonise and repopulate the Don. If for whatever reason this is not happening, we will need to look as to the reasons for this which could be e.g. improvements needed in habitat, fish pass ineffectiveness or negative trends in species dynamics may account for this.

Hello, part of the weir was left to protect the outside bank on the bend from excessive erosion which would effect the footpath. What remains doesn't impeed fish migration and allows part of the heritage of the structure to be retained. Hope that helps explain why we only partially removed it. thanks, matt (Fishery habitat officer)

It's some plastic or material debris. Look at the the rear tip, it flutters too much for a fish tail movement, look at the body, not straight, as for the colouring......I fish the Don from Hillsborough to Rotherham, then at Doncaster, with a stick float and maggots, in every swim I pick everything off and I've never caught a salmon in 30 years. Hillsborough through Sheffield is now all grayling and brown trout and Rotherham end is roach, dace, chub and the odd brown trout or grayling. I'll take anybody fishing in any swim and tell you beforehand what we will catch as the day progresses!

Does the EA or councils have the power of compulsory purchase of land for flood defences? There's a site at Darton on the upper Dearne, OS grid ref SE 310 101. I remember thinking, probably in 2007, that an L shaped bund, 400m by 100m and maybe 2m high, parallel to the western bank of the river then turning 90 degrees to the SW to create an impound would hold something in the region of 10,000m3 more than the existing floodplain. That is, by raising the water level in the enclosure to the same level as the river at the upstream end of the bund, probably about 1m. The point at which it starts to fill can be adjusted by cutting a shallow ditch, from memory it would only need to be a matter of inches deep, so that the enclosure starts to fill just before Darton starts to flood. There's hundreds of acres of farmland, and some that I believe still belongs to the Coal Authority, on the upper Dearne and Cawthorn dike upstream of Barnsley, I'm sure it'd be possible to build enough attenuation volume to prevent a 2007 level flood. Presumably, as with most things these days it's a matter of funding.

Thank you so much for sharing your tips of how to setup a trail camera in the garden. I have just bought one. And I have to admit. I think I put it way to high. I live next to a field. But it says in the instructions not to aim towards a field. Is this true? Because I think I'd capture more if I did aim towards a field? Also, the times I have been filming is between 23:00 - 04:00. Is that the best times? I know I have some feral cats around. And pheasants. But I'm hoping to capture more than that. Though pheasants can be interesting to sometimes.
@doncatchmentriverstrust4 жыл бұрын
So glad you've enjoyed our video! As most trail cameras are manufactured for the American deer-hunter market they are often suggested to be put quite high. But for the wildlife that we tend to capture in the UK (badgers, foxes, stoats) they're all quite low animals so around a metre or two off the ground and tilted slightly downwards should work well! I would try looking for tracks that animals make amongst nearby scrub and vegetation, or rocks/tree stumps they may scent mark on to position the camera, the edge of the field, for example, might work well as it might be a natural corridor for wildlife? It may struggle to pick up a whole field as I imagine it will only be able to ick up heat/movement of a certain distance. Hope that helps :) Sally
