Hello friend, I hope you are well. We are going to climb Skiddaw in August, but we would want an easier route that avoids the hard portion. Any recommendations?😅
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms Күн бұрын
The "classic" way up Skiddaw is probably from the car park/gate by Latrigg - it's not terribly steep, but it is long, and some find it a little boring. Great views back over Keswick and Derwentwater, though, so definitely not to be sniffed at! Alternatively, you could reverse the end of this walk, and go up via Bakestall, get to the top and go back, but that's also quite a long walk... Hope that's of some help - on a good day, any way up Skiddaw is worth the effort!

I have just found your channel (liked & sub'd) and love this video. I definately want to walk your route with my partner and look forward to watching more of your videos. Any advice on where to park? I have tried zooming in on OS maps, but cannot see anything clearly marked. Thanks!

In 1965 my wife and I whilst on our honeymoon first discovered Friar's Cragg and did this walk many times in later years. We always enjoyed looking for the low water marks and sitting on the end bench devouring the splendid view of the lake. We have 59 years of happy memories of walking in Lakeland but sadly can no longer walk far but still managed to enjoy the valleys.

Hi. It's about a 10 mile walk, and around 3,430 ft/1,045 m of ascent, and is a long day... Possibly 8 - 10 hours, depending on speed and how many breaks you take!

Just finished this route yesterday and took a 1hr trek to/fro Lonscale Fell as a 'bonus' Wainwright from Skiddaw Little Man, your recommendation of using the lesser-trodden path on the western side of Skiddaw to miss out the entirety of the climb up Skiddaw-South was very much welcome once getting to the top of Carl Side and seeing the wall of scree that was ahead.

I have unfinished business with this Horseshoe. I attempted a solo hike on 22nd July 2023, My grandpa had passed away the day before after suffering quite severely with Dementia in his last few weeks. I needed time to myself the following day to let it all sink in. Getting out on the fells is my way of resetting myself mentally and I was training fr the national 3 peaks challenge I had coming up in the September so I wanted to test myself. I started at 7:30 and the weather was wet with zero wind, 100meters up grizedale and I could only see 5-10 meters around me due to the mist. Summited Grizedale and literally stood there for five mins…….. couldn’t hear anything, no wind at all, no noise other than my breathing, it was pretty surreal to be honest. Carried onto Crag hill, soon as I got up to the bottom of that all hell broke loose, weather went crazy, was getting blown over by the wind and I tripped over a rock and I slid down towards the valley for about 10 meters however that could’ve been more or less, happened quickly, I smashed my ankle on another rock and stopped. I hadn’t seen a single sole throughout the hike and still couldn’t see anymore than 10-15 meters max in all directions. Self preservation kicked in and I went straight down literally on my arse until I reached the path. I’m going back there to finish what I started. The weather can change instantly up on the fells.

There are a couple of points where there are some slight drops near the road, but no serious cliffs. The road basically follows a valley up and another down, so you shouldn’t be exposed at any point. Worth checking out this, and our other film of the route from the other direction, before you go, to make sure. It’s not the steepest drive in the Lakes. Good luck!

I fell in love with the Lake District on my first of two crossing along the Coast to Coast way back in the mid 1980s. Derwent water away from the hustle and bustle of the road is very peacefull and relaxing, but I have only ever done it from Keswick to Borrowdale and visa versa, but later in the year I will attempt a full circuit with my trusty Canon Camera and tripod to stock up on some photographic Memories for the time I know will come when I can no longer hike the Fells, Valleys and Mountains in the area. There is nothing more relaxing for me than a two weeks ramble round the Lake District than a Lakeside stroll on my way to Borrowdale and Stonetwaite Campsite, for a weeks hiking or the hike back to Keswick to catch the Coach back to flat Essex. Now I am retired I am planning another visit this summer to recharge my Memory Banks with the scenic Beauty of Derwent Water and Borrowdale. Now I am retired I may even change from my normal camping routine at and opt for B&B. Thank You LDF for the video. Tony in Essex.

I've been visiting the lakes since 1989 on and off (more on than off) . This year will be my ninth summer holiday in a row and I never get tired it: ther are mountains, hills, woodland and forest, and of course beautiful lakes. I sometimes travel a little outside the lake district on days off from strenuous walking and go to the sea. The small town of Silloth is very pleasant if a little olde worlde-there aren't many shops but there is a cobbled main street and a sea front facing the Solway firth with a view of Scotland across the water. A little along the coast is Allonby Bay-largely deserted and peaceful but with stunning views especially of the lakeland mountains in the distance. As I say, the whole area has something for the outdoor minded person.
