It will help if you move the puddle flange at least 250mm or more away from the wall for better waterproofing better screed falls etc

Putting that new timber against that old rotten timber is a big mistake, and would have taken literally half an hour to remove. I have seen multiple times over the years the new timber rotting because of the fungus in the old rotten timber . Your old timber had either dry rot or wet rot both are a fungus and will transfer to the new timber if not removed.

If seen worse then that. It's held up really well. No damage to the Oregon studs. That plastic "flashing" I've seen used at the base of timber windows in the hope that any water that gets there doesn't rot the stud frames. Without seeing exactly where it was during the demo, my guess is it was used in a similar manner to prevent stud rot at the height of the bath frame.

Thanks for insight @robertdilorenzo1245, i think you are definitely correct on this as it lined up exactly with the edge of the bath lip connect to the stud frame. cheap and effective

All very well but no one inspects the water proofing and ones the tiles are down the inspector cannot see underneath the tiles and gives a certificate of compliance without no way of knowing.Bodgy inspectors don’t even have ladders to get in the roof!

Have to stop the water at the outside. Water seeping through will eventually damage the concrete to the point of failure.

Goodbye screeds indeed. 70mm stepdown, about time. Structural falls 1:80-concreters will hate this. I just hope that those responsible for the soon to be revised AS4564 are on the same page.

Thanks David. Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) use is important because; it eliminates the need for vibrator use ( which is the cause of majority problems associated with concrete placement) and the supplied concrete quality cannot be compromised ( ie adding water in the site, correct aggregate use and correct slump/spread). Air Voids can be avoided by using SCC which is important for durability, structural, fire and acoustic compliance. AIR VOIDS ARE ALSO THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE TO ACHIEVE WATERPROOF WALLS WITHOUT SCC. I recommend all to read Concrete Inst. of Australia article; volume 50, issue 1, page 47 which states "Cracks in some concretes containing certain permeability-reducing admixtures were found to heal at widths of up to 0.3 mm" How can we ensure that crack widths cannot exceed 0.3 mm (some argue 0.5mm). AIR VOIDS ARE MUCH BIGGER THAN 0.3 or 0.5mm cracks under any circumstances. Therefore the question is begged to be answered; how is it possible to offer waterproofing warranty with just admixtures on concrete walls without bonded membrane wall protection, without SCC and without providing an Air Void Free Warranty.

I think its always better if the licensed waterproofer is also licensed tiler so you wouldnt have this conflict of interest where the Tiler is riping up those membrane off just so he could get his tile installed the way he wanted it. We were lucky to have some renovation at our place and the tiler and the wateproofer is the same guy. Btw great presentation and very informative

A great presentation. Just curious regarding considering AS3740.2021 clause 2.3.1 where installing a floor waste, the membrane is shall to be installed to a ‘substrate’ with a minimum fall (NCC overrides with 1:50max/1:80min). Under 3740.2021 substrate is defined as ‘surface to which the membrane is applied’. I may have missed any discussion on this in the presentation but generally speaking and in particular for 2 storey dwellings I would think this would require the membrane be installed on top of the screed (substrate) in many instances. Where a falls to floor wastes are required, waterproofing over the screed wouldn’t be doable under a lot of circumstances subject to AS3740.2021, so I would think Part 10.2 of the Housing Provisions would have to be the most practical choice if intending to waterproof under the screed. I.e AS3740.2021 wouldn’t be a chosen pathway commonly for this reason. Do you know if there are any other considerations to this when choosing which is best, under or over screed? Cheers
@LennyandVansWorld
@LennyandVansWorld 5 ай бұрын
A couple of typos above but the main point is waterproofing under a screed wouldn’t be able to be done subject to AS3740.2021 in a lot of circumstances where falls are required due to the clause and definition of substrate. Therefore surely the overwhelming majority are opting for the Housing Provisions pathway where a membrane doesn’t have to be installed to a substrate that’s has falls (under screed) but not sure if there is other considerations around this?
@DavidPrevite-WaterproofExpert
@DavidPrevite-WaterproofExpert 5 ай бұрын
i believe housing provisions has its own pitfalls such as requiring a 25mm step down into the shower area which is also undesirable.
