Do you filter the kitchen water at all before sending it off to the banana circle? We are in Greece and use lots of oils in our cooking. I would be concerned that the oils would inhibit decomposition.
@africanhomestead
@africanhomestead 9 ай бұрын
That’s a great question! We do not filter our grey water coming from the kitchen sink and washing machine. However, the only oil we put down the kitchen drain is residual oil on our pots and pans that we remove with soap and water. If we need to dispose of larger amounts of oil, like for frying chicken, then we dispose of that elsewhere. On a related note, we also limit the amount of bleach we use, since that kills soil microbial life in the banana circle. Are you planning a circle garden? What will you plant?
@futurecaredesign
@futurecaredesign 8 ай бұрын
@@africanhomestead Yes, we are more or less the same in our habits then. Still, I am thinking I am not going to risk it due to the smells associated with kitchen greywater. Our banana circle will sit right on the edge between Zone 1 and 2, close to the house and my partner has a sensitive nose.

Very good design elements. How far from the eaves do u plan to put the passionfruit vine?
@africanhomestead
@africanhomestead Жыл бұрын
Great question! I plan on moving the permanent trellis about 3 ft/1m away from the house eves. This will minimize the vines reaching over to the house and growing up the roof or entering the attic space, which is a big problem with the current placement. With that, I plan on raising it about 12-18 inches/30-45 centimeters to prevent that 4 pm sun from directly shining in, while allowing more indirect light. I’ve learned it’s important to severely trim back the vine from the top of the trellis after it completes the fruiting cycle. Otherwise it will develop a thick and impenetrable mat that will prevent fruit from dropping through.

Thanks for sharing! This bring back some memories from my childhood and early teenage. Back in the 60's and 70's we mixed the concrete by hand when we built the foundation for a 65sqm cabin/summerhouse and our 20sqm boat house in a place with no running water or electricity at that time. Luckily there was a small stream with clean water nearby. We had to carry everything els by hand, so it was a long process of hard work even if the whole family where helping us. The cabin was a few hundred meter uphill and the boat house was equally downhill from the road. Even we younger ones developed thick hard skin in our hands at that time. Just wonder how today's teenagers in the west would handle such hard work...
