This is a great comedy and a real nice breakdown of the stunts. I am surprised you didn't comment on the guy leaping over the wall onto his back on a restaurant table. From what I understand that guy permanently hurt himself on that one. (Maybe you mention this in your podcast?).

You might like this story. I worked in Hollywood for years, and I got the opportunity to meet the stunt man (after he had grown old and become a stunt coordinator) who jumped out of the way of that spinning, runaway propeller from that exploding fighter plane on the runway in "Tora, Tora, Tora". It looked so real. I can't remember his name, but I told him that it looked like he almost got killed in that shot. He told me: "That's because I almost got killed in that shot. The stunt went wrong and that propeller wasn't supposed to fly off the plane like that."

There's one stunt that always fascinated me, that you didn't explain. Shortly before the sidecar motorcycle hits the bridge, A kubelwagen runs off the road, tumbles down the cliff, and end ends up in the river, upside-down. At this point, you can see a man's arm reaching out from beneath the overturned vehicle, waving. It looks like a guy must have been trapped in the semi-submerged, upside-down car, for real! I always wondered if that stunt was planned like that, or if it went wrong. I also wonder if the man was OK. Was he killed? Was he badly injured? Did he lose that arm? Did He drown in the river? You seem like an expert. Can you tell me anything about it?

@tomarmour9224 I have a long winded answer for you… I grew up with Casey. We ended up working in the same business but in different departments. We actually got to work together on an episode of Lethal Weapon (the series). I’m in Transportation but I worked closely with stunts on that show and learned some of their process. His responsibility is for and to Tom in a specialized capacity depending on what’s happening on camera. Since Tom really does do all his stunts, there really is no need to have any of his stunt doubles ‘take over’ when camera rolls. Casey and all of the players before and since Casey are hired by the stunt coordinator for their likeness to Tom and their all around ability. Often times a stunt might be performed for camera specifically so the Director of Photography and camera operators can see the action first to make sure they have right angles, lighting and focus on the action. That’s where Casey comes in. Once that’s done, they perform as an advisory to Tom in each circumstance the action calls for. Casey is there as his all-around double but there will be different lead stunt specialist for each particular scene to advise to the skill set needed specifically for that scene. One guy for fighting, one guy for motorcycles, and another for driving and so-on. All of the stunts for a particular Production are performed for months, sometimes years before actual filming. Each sequence is laid out and repeated over and over until it basically becomes muscle memory for both Tom and his doubles. For example, a roof jump into water with a wire de-accelerator. All of the elements would be conceived on paper first by Tom and a writing team. A Location scout would reveal the parameters of the place picked to do the stunt - to discover roof height, distance to water, linear distance from roof to water, etc. The stunt coordinator will select the equipment and technique that the stunt will be performed with. They choose a double that will learn every aspect of this stunt to make it a safe and repeatable performance. I’d imagine Tom is involved all along the way and would definitely be part of this process of rehearsing the move over and over with Casey and others advising on purpose and technique. Casey would be in costume and perform the stunt for camera but Tom’s performance is ultimately used. What percentage does Casey do, 100%. What percentage do you see on camera? Maybe 0.1% in a jump cut that the editor liked because of the way a piece of wardrobe looked from a random angle or some other anomaly that was preferred to Toms takes. What sells is Tom’s performances. If it’s not a Tom Cruise Production, the stunt players, definitely double the lead actors on camera. That was the whole concept from the beginning, save the talent from bruising.😂 Tom is different, he’s a fantastic stunt actor. … and that’s all I have to say about that. - Forrest Gump

Who cares ? It's the norm now. He has probably the biggest ego of any actor. Vic Armstrong had to reign in Harrison telling him he was taking food off his plate. Harrison appreciated it and cut back on the stunts. Tom isn't that generous. He's doing someone out of a job but he's selling the film.

I have to agree with some of the comments here. Yes, there are stunt professionals that could do what he's doing but it is HIM doing it. Thats's what makes the movie and that's what sells the movie. When he's hanging off the plane you say "what if the plane crashed". There's just as much chance of the plane crashing into Tom's trailer while he's in it than there is while he's on it. Love you John and your Chanel but TC is, to me, a stuntman who acts rather than an actor who does stunts. Keep up the great work.

I think at this point Tom Cruise has earned the right to put himself in an element of danger. I know that the modern stunt industry is geared around safety, but I like that Cruise reminds me of an older class of daredevil - like your Houdinis, your Evil Knievels, that bloke that wire-walked between the twin towers - where the public spectacle is part of the story. It doesn't matter how convincingly you can recreate these things with CGI. The point is that you go into these films knowing that Tom Cruise has gone (as you put it) 'above and beyond' in order to present you with an exciting piece of cinema, and that makes all the difference to me. I wish there was more of that adventurous spirit in modern film-making. Honestly, if he gets himself killed someday, so be it. There are countless professionals out there (racing drivers, free solo climbers, stunt pilots) who accept that their work might kill them. And sometimes it does. But that element of risk is part of the thrill and the romance. It's why Niki Lauda got back in his car. We can't let health and safety completely kill the very human desire to do mad things sometimes. Even if it means a movie might get shut down (won't somebody think of the insurance companies!) Also, I believe that Cruise has done enough to be seen as a stunt performer in his own right, and not just an actor that's taking their work.

Exactly. The fact that people get jealous because of it, shows how old fashioned the stunt community is. Yes, everybody can do it with the right practice. If somebody else would do the stunts the movies wouldn't have any special impact. He's doing it because it benefits the damn material. And he's doing it for more than 20 years and yet people want him to not do it. Everybody involved in this movie knows the risks of a potential shutdown.
@Shaki123
@Shaki123 25 күн бұрын
What a bunch of nonsense. Everyone in the production of that movie knows what's up. It's part of the risk and it what makes this movie stand out against all the other CGI infested fakery we see these days. The fact that TC does this make him a reason to go to the cinema. There are enough other movies where stuntman and women can do their thing. You act like this is some kind of social welfare thing. My God man. Even if he has an issue, everybody will be ready for it. So, he IS a stuntman within the disciplines he's working. You have to let go of the actor thing. He obviously isn't only an actor anymore. No reason to let a stuntman do it if you can do it yourself and elevate the movie with it.

You may be right, in fact, you probably are quite right. TC shouldn’t be doing these gags because if something happens to him the production shut down. However, at this point it’s become part of the marketing campaign. The audience is now expecting Tom to do these outlandish, crazy stunts, and according to last film, even though you barely seen him jump off the motorcycle with the parachute, the huge marking campaign was that he did himself. They even released a featurette of the stunt months before the film was released. Why does he do it really? Marketing! And I’m sure he’s having a hell of a lot of fun doing it. I know I would.😂
