Are these oil paints? Do you recommend so drying out does not take place?? What about the smell of oils? Thanks Love this portrait and your dialog

Simple layers? So this is painted over days and letting layers dry before adding more paint? Couldn't quite tell while watching this.
@dalerhodespaintings4 ай бұрын
I don't worry about letting the layers dry - If I want to do another layer I just paint either wet into wet or onto dry if it has dried...

To me it is hard to intuitively see tone in colored pigment.
@dalerhodespaintings6 ай бұрын
It is hard. Seeing tone is one of the hardest parts of learning to paint. And it's especially hard seeing tone in colour - that is why many painters start with a purely tonal layer. So you can do a tonal painting - maybe using only raw umber and white or similar - to get all the tones down, and then put a colour layer on top. It is relatively easy to make sure the coloured layer is the same tone as the tone you are putting it onto... I have a couple of demonstrations of tonal paintings in my Understanding Painting course on my website if you are interested...

Im interested,why orange colour is under paimt.What difference is if you paint a blue sky on the white canvas??Anyway,,the sky you made is amazing ,so clear and fresh!👍
@KnewTherapy6 ай бұрын
With oil paint, a base layer helps the paint blend and spread. The color adds a layer that can be used later in the painting
@BJones-yw4dd6 ай бұрын
@@KnewTherapy @bobymox ... and can glow through the paint layer above it, depending on the transparency of the paints you're using. Kind of optical mixing.
@dalerhodespaintings6 ай бұрын
Great replies and sorry I've taken so long. The colour to put down as an underpainting or ground is really personal. A more neutral colour is easier to judge subsequent layers of colour on, but a coloured ground tends to peep through later layers of paint, and if it is different to them it makes them more lively. So orange under a blue sky does tend to give a livelier feel to the painting, particularly if the ground is never completely covered...

I like your painting. Are you using acrylic or oil? You can paint layers with oils, some do not.
@40bdg6 ай бұрын
If you look at the shots of his pallette, there are two small containers which are used for oil painting mediums...so my guess is Oils.
@BJones-yw4dd6 ай бұрын
Oils, as they mix so well and smoothly on his palette and don't dry in between.
@dalerhodespaintings6 ай бұрын
Sorry I should have said, this is all with oils. I much prefer oil as it can be wet and usable on the palette for hours, and it is easier to paint wet in wet with oils, which I prefer...

Thanks! I very seldom use acrylic. I like to have paint on my palette for long periods without drying, and also being able to paint wet in wet on the canvas. I find acrylic too limiting for that...

As an artist and an instructor that has filmed my painting for others…..it is such a gift that an artist will take the time to set up and record and share their techniques with us for free…..so when you think about making a snarky comment….think before doing so…..unless you have done this process it’s a lot harder than you can imagine. BTW….beautiful work and thank you.

...from what I've seen so far, 99.9% of the comments on you tube clips like this one are over-enthusiastic (wow, I love it, etc.), regardless of the quality of the presentation, which speaks eloquently about the level of the public (this kind of public, clapping between parts at concerts is called "generous" there)... ...This happens to be a serious, professional demo, but, in my view, too many of them are made for lucrative purposes...

The teacher is showing the technique, not the actual picture or painting as such, if you can't imagine what is behind him whilst he's explaining the technique then perhaps you should be thinking of taking up something else besides painting. You see you need a brain to paint, a brain with imagination. I think that maybe you may be lacking in both.....great lesson by the way...👍
