Great video! I don’t think most people are aware that NC is the top sweet potato producer.

Sweet potatoes right? Do the vines die off naturally, or are they mechanically removed somehow?

You need a Peanut Sweep, (Vine Lifter), cut back just in the bottom of the furrow, 1 inch deep, not disturbing the Hill of Potatoes, folding the Vine back up to top of bed. The have a right hand & left hand sweep for either side of the row.

Blake, we have the same problem as Clifton is trying to solve. Are you able to give more detail on your thoughts? Nothing i can find on YT which marries with what you've said.

Video is to short. We (the viewers) want more of that action. Most people don’t have a lot of knowledge of the sweet potato harvesting processes.

Worked on 2 or 3 vine cutter prototypes at NCSU back in the late 70’s. 1 had 2 turf tires turned on the horizontal centered on top of the row, 2 modified peanut vine lifting sweeps in front of them punching all the vibes in front of the tires, it was OK, had promise. The best was a set of rubber mower conditioner rolls out if a New Holland Mowco. Set them up running 1.5 inches of the row top with the front run set 2 inches higher they did a excellent job ripping everything on the row out of the ground, occasionally pulled the main root. The best we worked with back then was the Mowco Rollers, tested all 3 of them for 2 or 3 years at the Clinton Field Station. You look like you’ve hot a great model there.

Do you ever modify a mulcher or rotary tiller with listers & your rolling cones on back. Ferguson equipment in Suffolk Va made one back in the day, I know BW implement in Button willow California use to have some similar row mulchers. I found mulching rows in Potato’s to eliminate all clods & uniform beds prior to planting helps so much with harvest, once the mother root is pulled if possible the dirt has a grated tendency to fall away.

Nice piece of equipment but it is WAY too much weight for that three point. Glad I don't have to take it down the road...

Few things pay as well as pulling & cutting stalks behind a picker. Good to see. I saw the Orthman puller in a field once, good machine like this one.

When I was at NCSU in the 70’s & early 80’s we worked on several mother vine pullers like this, vine shredders, & chain diggers. The photos, working diagrams & videos are all at both the Library on campus in archives & the Ag Eng Dept. One was a little similar to this but they had some neat ideas & working models that never went into production. I’m certain anyone interested could look them up. I remember testing some in Clinton at the research farm there at the time.
