I'm glad your pens worked so well for you. I'm curious to know if you put your pen wars scores up as a summary somewhere? I have the previous model of the Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pen, and am very happy with how it writes. It's also their Printmaker's Teal colour, but has a less shiny/iridescent quality to the lacquer. It's one of my favourite fountain pens (but I'd say most of my pens are my "favourites"). Looking forward to your other reviews. Your wife has fabulous handwriting. Please let her know. :)

Thank you! I have pondered the idea of putting the scores somewhere, so perhaps one day I can. I have thought about the brush pen before, but dismissed it at the time since I thought it was too small. However, my appreciation for smaller pens has grown a lot and I think I’ll have to give one a try! Thanks for the suggestion. Also, I’ll pass that along to my wife. She started practicing her handwriting a couple months ago and it has improved so much. She will be delighted to hear your comment!

@@CollinsWonder The Brush pen was one of my wishlist pens for around 7 years (it was heavily publicised to the Bullet Journal Community, and pre-dates my interest in fountain pens). I lucked out and got one on their Black Friday Sales last year. So it has extra meaning for me. My first real exposure to fountain pens, and also getting it at a bargain. :D The pen has the width of a standard bic ballpoint pen, to give you an idea of it's diameter.

So… with $210 price mark knowing it’s a steal nib, which would you recommend more, joule or Lamy 2000?
@CollinsWonder
@CollinsWonder 6 күн бұрын
I know technically the lamy2000 scores higher in my pen wars. The Lamy is a great pen, however I really like this one and I personally would get it over the Lamy. I know it’s just a steel nib, but I don’t mind that too much. I also think that if you are looking for a gold nib there are other pens to consider for $200.

I had mixed feelings when I got it. It was my first flex nib. I felt that the pen was: 1. Unfinished, there are some areas on the inside of the pen that aren’t polished. I was just a little shocked to see them. It almost felt like it a pen made in someone’s garage. 2. The nib on my pen looked a little bent on one of the tines, so it felt like someone previously owned/used my pen. (All speculation on my part.). 3. I wasn’t expecting how scratchy the pen writes. (Nothing compared to a dip pen), but it wasn’t a very smooth writer for me. Over time, I have grown to love and appreciate this pen. I now enjoy using it greatly and have no regrets buying it (although I wish it was a little cheaper than in retails for.

@@CollinsWonder The price is actually what mostly keeps me from buying it at the moment since I am not sure what to expect. The brand has really gained some popularity - maybe they will get a little more refined in time. I like the one that was produced for the Dutch Pen Show - it‘s called „Tulip“ and that name really fits the pen very well. :)

Interesting that you said you had a terrible experience with the MB JFK. I recently bought a MB 149 and writes like crap. I even called MB and they gave me the run around, but since you said it needs a break in period I will be patient with it. I also used MB ink thinking it was going to be glorious, but skips more than it writes. lol Just terrible, did you do anything in particular to the MB?
@CollinsWonder
@CollinsWonder 16 күн бұрын
I was just stubborn with it and went through a variety of inks before it started to work. I think my tines were too tight and it needed to be used to get them to loosen up. My issues were around the pen running so dry and it felt like it was always out of ink. If you haven’t tried a Iroshizuku ink (by Pilot) yet, I would try one. Those were the inks I used the majority of the time (they didn’t feel as dry while writing). Funny enough, I have sent my JFK pen in to be serviced at a repair center. The piston mechanism started to feel like it was needing some lubricants and I didn’t feel comfortable taking it apart myself… it really does suck that these really expensive pens have these kind of issues.

Interesting comments, but I disagree when you say a fair price would be more like $120. You must factor in the gold nib. A gold nib replacement for a Lamy 2000 is around $132 and for a Safari $124. Those are reasonable prices for gold nibs. A Kaweco gold nib is $160. So, that has to be the pricing starting point. Of course, more expensive brands have way more expensive nibs. There is also the 2000 stainless steel version, which is much more impressive and probably weighs over twice as much. I have both and overall prefer the steel with the broad nib, which writes more like a stub. It has often been said that no fountain pen collection is complete without the Bauhaus-inspired Lamy 2000, even if it is not one of your favorites, because of its classic design, which has had almost no changes since the 1960s. Even Pelican and Montblanc cannot say that about their flagship pens.

I too myself like cheaper pens since imo they are GREAT introductions for people to try and get into the hobby. I honestly like gifting Asvin more than safari as someone’s first pen just because how reliable and juicy these pens are. (Safari is juicy too but they are also kinda ugly lmao😅) I’m also obsessed with buying cheaper pens and find it extremely satisfying when I get a cheap a** pen that happens to be a banger writer aka pilot 78g.
