I had the tailgate rust. I removed the garnish. Sanded it all down and did some home made paint. Put some 3M abrasion tape on it and put in some small plastic washers on the attachment points to raise the garnish about 1/16 inch away from the tail gate. I also have the fuel pump issue -recall on 2018/2019- but amazingly my 2018 VIN doesn’t “apply”. Even tho it’s the exact same issue and the exact same year.

Yeah this is mostly on the dealer. I'd take your "Faulty" 4runner over my 2013 Jeep grand cherokee any day. I had documented over $100,000 in repairs ( covered under warranty) by the time I was done with that jeep.

The newer ones seem to have poor quality issues with more technology. I always buy used 4runners. I have a 2013 Limited with 213k bought used and virtually no issues except dash light circus occasionally. That said my 3rd generation was the best quality and established a lot of the reputation. Emissions and mileage everything is made cheaper and lighter. More technology more problems. I always buy used and I don't think I will ever buy anything newer than 2019 Toyota now because of the quality issues. Deflector looks improperly installed. Paint can be computer matched. I have never seen master cylinder replaced, but Powerstop Z36 eliminated my marshmallow pedal. I don't even understand how it can hit firewall. My garnish had a gasket around it. I'm shocked Toyota doesn't take care of issues they used to. The new water based ecological paint is crap just like the touch up paint.

My 2020 4 runner SR5 has 50k miles on her and I can still get what almost what I paid for it. I got an offer last week from Toyota dealer for $30K. I only paid $36K for her brand new in 2020 during covid, (MSRP was $39k)all toyotas were on sale. Everyone else was hiding in their basements from the scary corona virus, while I was out making deals on a new truck. Ive had my park lnterock switch on the transmission, cracked CV boots, and a door power lock solenoid replaced under warranty. Only thing that worries me is after 4 years, rust is already starting to corrode my frame. Thats been a big toyota issue for years

Shocking treatment. Always check your car very well before you sign anything when picking up a vehicle. Companies will often try to get to sign paperwork before you see the vehicle. Dont, inspect it first.

Hello from Edmonton. I can't thank you enough for posting this video. Like you, I was about to buy one of these 4Runners as a retirement present to myself. I was just about to visit my Toyota dealer for a test drive this week when I saw your video. You just saved me 70k and I can't thank you enough. Like most people I was high & drunk on the "Toyota Legendary Reliability cool-aid", until I saw your video. Thank you for turning on a light bulb in Edmonton, Alberta!

Dealerships always take advantage of older people. My grandparents would take thier jeep in for a an oil change my gramps is 83 years old he cant do it himself anymore. The dealership never changed the oil and the jeep blew up. I always offered to change the oil for them but they never wanted to bother me. Im a mechanic so if the dealership says thats normal i can always say "no it isnt im a mechanic so fix it." I feel bad for you man given your age this should be your last truck.

My stealership broke 2 bolts from skid plate during oil change. They tried to charge me $64 for 2 bolts. The bolts were $1.61 each. Then, they put only 1 bolt in the oil pan cover plate & left the plate hanging by 1 bolt that had only 1 thread on it.

The king in hiding, sorry for this bad experience. Hate it when things like this happen. I bought my used 2018 TRD Off-Road from a Ford dealer in Kalispell, Montana yesterday (25 May 2024). It is not a commission operated dealer. It had 104,xxx miles on the odometer and I am happy with it. I drove 230 miles to get it. I bought a powertrain warranty that goes for 6 years and unlimited miles for shy of $5k and has zero deductible. I can cancel it and receive retroactive reimbursement if I choose to. I decided not to get the 3yr/36k mile bumper to bumper warranty Toyota still has on it.

Paint on 5th gens has always been bad. My 17 has a half dollar sized paint chip in the hood and lots of pitting despite a hood rock deflector. The TRD Pro IMO is not worth it, the TRD Off Road Premium is the way to go since can get a suspension lift from Toytec, OME, Icon or similar for much less. For sure issues with these but I’ve got the Magnuson supercharger and have driven from Texas to Utah and back and hammered it for 50k miles now and it’s been bulletproof

Sorry you are going through this but many "Car Dealerships" are notorious, liars, cheats and thieves. The only thing they understand is BAD EXPOSURE, PRESS and OPTICS which can hurt their business. With that being said, here is what I would do. 1. Go see the owner and ask him if he wants to see you picketing outside his dealership with LARGE SIGNS? 2. And, how would he feel to see a story in the newspaper and on TV? (If you start picketing there WILL be a story). 3. Ask Toyota Canada the same questions. 4. Ask them who their attorney's are so you can send them a potential law suit (not that you would but they don't know). 5. Give them a way out by doing the right thing (be ready with a list of what you want fixed). 6. After waiting one week, BEGIN!!!

Man! I can hear the frustration in your voice. I sympathize with all of it. You search long and hard for the right vehicle that ticks off the most boxes in the “I need,” “I want,” and the “nice to have” columns. Then you realize that it’s so nice that you went over budget. You stretch your finances and drive it home after spending four and a half hours at the stealership. But it’s frigging awesome, and it’s yours! That’s when the problems start. That’s when you get to know the service people way more than you ever wanted to. You have to keep calling and chasing them just to get a status on your damn truck! Ask me how I know.

Knock on wood I have a 2014 4Runner w/140K miles and have had zero issues. We did upgrade the suspension ditching their very expensive system for a nice off road suspension with minor lift that’s east and cheap to service. No rust, smoke, nothing. I change oil every 5K no matter what and do brakes and fluids myself. It’s been a very reliable ride I’ll never part with.

My experience with all dealerships reminds me of yours. I was going to purchase a 4Runner but opted for a Jeep Wrangler. Since my experience with dealership is so bad, I am just hoping that luck is on my side and that I never have to deal with any stealer ship from ANY car manufacturer. I presently own vehicles from several brands:Honda,Mazda,Toyota, GM, Ford and Jeep. I recently bought the Jeep 04/24. The best dealership experience was Honda. Toyota has always been ready to tell me no before I tell them what is happening. Mazda did everything to not honor a steering fault….I certainly believe that the auto industry needs a government body to PROTECT THE CONSUMER. Thank you for sharing your experience. Your 4Runner still looks great…

Sorry you’re having so many issues with your Toyota. It seems like the older ones held up better. I’ve had my FJ Cruiser for 14 years. The secret is to do all your own maintenance. I’m not a mechanic, but I learned to work on my Toyota via KZfaq. I don’t think I would buy a new Toyota with all the problems I’m hearing they’re having.

Yeah, I always do my own maintenance as well…however during a warranty period, I always took my vehicles to the dealership…so if anything goes sideways, it’s clearly on them…being the only ones who have touched it. That always went well for me. Unfortunately that didn’t entirely work out this time. Cheers.

This is disgraceful. Toyota Canada ought to be ashamed of their treatment of you, a customer. Please, in the future, request Toyota to set up a Case with a case numbers and ask for a factory tech to evaluate your vehicle. Put everything in writing. You will get better service when they know you are documenting the whole process.

I have a 2022 4runner and after watching your video checked on the garnish on the rear hatch and sure enough, I have some slight rusting occurring on the edge; however, it's not bad enough for me to have Toyota repair/repaint and possibly cause even more damage. Remember folks, just because you have a warranty doesn't mean the problem will be fixed correctly. If it's something I can handle myself I'll probably do a better job than anyone else.

Smoke off lot, normal. Do an under treatment and it will happen for weeks. Master cylinder issue decades and generations at this point. As someone who got their pro also sight unseen off the boat my only issue was steering wheel not being aligned by a lot and that the roof tracks arnt tracked. Don’t buy the factory accessories any manufacturer. Sounds like you got a bad order. Of my many silverados my 1 gmc Sierra is the one that made me never buy another gmc. Colors have a specific code, it can match if reputable. As for rust, again decades old, especially up north, harsh chemicals, blame blackface

First of all, beautiful truck and I hope you have better luck with her moving forward. Thanks for sharing your very detailed and comprehensive review of your experience with it. This is very timely as I have been considering the purchase of a 4-Runner before the new generation comes out this year. This is the first I have heard of any ABS issues with this but I have heard of the rust issues on the tailgate and especially on the frames underneath if you live in areas with snow. And, I have also heard of the Toyota paint easily chipping on these so if I do buy one, and after watching this review, it is unlikely, I would certainly get the bottom hit with some fluid film or other protectant and also get some paint protection. Thank you for the time and attention you have put into this video and I will say that you are a gentleman considering you didn't throw anyone under the bus on this. Believe me, they certainly deserved to be.

I have always heard that new 4Runners smoke/smell because they are shipped overseas from Japan and not built local like all other Toyotas are, because of having to be on the ocean so long they are oiled/lubbed up more so than normal as to not have rust issues from the salt in the air. I have two 4Runners currently and really noticed it on the one right off the boat (actually went back to the dealer because of it), it went away after several weeks.
