Look up Wire EDM pieces, when assembled you cannot see the seperation lines. With that small a gap air doesn't have time to escape as you compress the object, leading the compressible air to, hey what do you know, compress. No need for a spring, you have air acting as its own spring.

Wire isn’t thinner than air, but the volume of air in the cavity simply doesn’t have the ability to escape at a rate faster than it’s being compressed due to the ultra tight fit. If the pin was held down for an extended period, compression would ultimately relieve over time as the air escaped slowly.

Unless I am wrong about this but the process I’ve witnessed myself was the machine cutting the hole out of one piece of material and the shaft being made from another. That’s what enables it to make incredibly tight tolerances and fit to whatever size they need. The wire used can be as thin as 0.02mm according to what I was told by the operator. Taking the wire thickness into account I don’t think you’ll get an air tight fit like this if you “plug” the hole back up with the cut out piece like he does in the video
