However, libertarians, like Friedman, believe that the market is rational and self-correcting. Any government intervention to protect consumers is overreach. Broadly speaking, any government intervention is tantamount to a socialist market.

@@Hunterchuck yep, that is the flaw in capitalism we r now becoming the hunger games. That's why we need something inbetween that can work better for everyone and is more fair. Obviously, number 1 step leave money out of politics. 2nd, have some socialistic principles allowing poorer folks to get ahead. Best is a mix. Like if the government was all democrat we'd be run into the ground. If the government was all republican we'd be run into the ground. Need like something inbetween.

Not quite. Western capitalism was built on creating jobs, providing value, like offering services or products. And we aren’t expected to work ourselves to death, we aren’t China or Africa, or South America, or in the 1600s.

It certainly seems that within a capitalist society the closer you get to socialism, (worker union socialism for example. By having unions more ubiquitously and with more power) the greater the quality of life is and more stable the economy is across the board for everyone.

It certainly seems unlikely especially given, that there's certainly a trend that more socialism (in terms of things that are actually actually socialist like trade unions, or employ owned companies) universally and consistently improves quality of life. Socialism is very demonized for having a track record of being either targeted by CIA backed coops, election interference or otherwise slowly becoming military dictators to try to fend off the west, or, otherwise, universally improving quality of life

@Agc2749 I think the point is that when discussing such complex ideas, people lose the nuance when their emotions get the better of them. I don’t know where Charlie Kirk went with the conversation after that. But, if he were too defensive of his position he might have not learned that guy wrote books on the subject.

@@ManicTulip76 I guess socialist-like policies have been implemented in the US before. FDR made the New Deal which had many new government sponsored work programs in the effort to rebound the economy and civilian morale with easily accessible work. It wasn’t a long term plan though, the idea was to rebound from disaster, when the country still had plenty of expansion to do on its own soil and resources. The world is indeed different now. Now I’d argue, we can do fine with most ideas we have in free market capitalism, but we need regulations for worker safety and financial well being, and we need a more robust tax code and national budget. Our public works and social/healthcare services need to have more funding. Insurance companies need a reality check, and so do numerous monopolies. There also needs to be new legislation surrounding Congress term limits, insider trading, and a new “Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890” for the modern economy. I said a lot but, I was trying to be as specific as possible. Where do you lie on some of these issues?
