My boy took a whole 12 minutes just to get set up 😂. I understand this is about comfort and not speed. That being said, at least do your back a favor and get a folding dolly to move the lifts around. Additionally, it wouldn't hurt to invest in some modular rolling toolbox and wheelchair ramp for your truck.
@mjspiess
@mjspiess Күн бұрын
It took a bit of time to get everything ready early one, but with some repetition, I can get it set up more quickly now. I pretty much only use it any time both front or rear wheels need to be removed. The lifts have wheels on one end and aren't too heavy to begin with. I usually focus on my form to save my back. A folding dolly is a good idea too though. I have considered investing in a modular rolling toolbox, but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. A wheelchair ramp could really streamline the process. It’s all about working smarter, not harder! Thanks for the tips!

No, I sold it. The BassLink SM 125 is praised for its ability to enhance factory sound systems without taking up much space. It provides a noticeable improvement in bass response, making it a good option for those looking to add some low-end punch without disturbing the neighbors. The subwoofer has a frequency response range of 35Hz to 120Hz, which is quite respectable for a compact subwoofer. While it may not hit the very deepest bass notes that larger subs can, it still offers a solid performance for its size. Overall, the Infinity BassLink SM 125 is a great choice if you’re looking for a compact, easy-to-install subwoofer that can significantly enhance your car’s audio system. Are you considering adding this to your car, or do you have another setup in mind? I actually upgraded from this to the Kicker Hideaway HS10 Powered Subwoofer and it fits in the same location as this 8" subwoofer. The only modification I had to make was cut a small 2" plastic piece from the mounting bracket in the lower right hand corner of this space and the 10" sounds so much better!

Matt, how would you describe the effectiveness of your eco-flow A/C unit on hot nights. Does it cool the entire back cabin substantially....or just keep you cool, perhaps while only using a light sheet? (I'm writing from Florida) And a big plus, not mentioned, is the ability to do light meal prep & eating while hiding from mosquitos. Think an Alaska trip. Good job!
@mjspiess
@mjspiess 6 күн бұрын
The ZeroBreeze A/C. I've read the EcoFlow Wave 2 is all around better. That unit can be found on eBay for around $600. I paid $450 for my ZeroBreeze. Anyway, the unit is quite effective for personal cooling, especially in hot climates like Florida and is especially good at removing humidity from the cabin. I have not verified with a thermometer, but the ZeroBreeze is designed to cool a small, enclosed space lowering the temperature by 10-30°F, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. I believe this to be true. It helps tremendously with humidity and often times, I get cold at night and that is just on "sleep mode" with the fan on the lowest speed. It does not work as well in direct sun light, as the heat from the sun is just too strong. It’s most effective in cooling the immediate area around you rather than the entire back cabin of a minivan, but with the tube aimed directly at me, I find it keeps me comfortable in sleeping bag and like I said earlier, I often get cold with it running all night. A light sheet might not be enough coverage and it may not cool the entire space substantially, but certainly the area you're laying in. It might struggle to cool the entire cabin, especially in direct sunlight, but it works very well at night. Positioning it close to where you sleep or sit will maximize its effectiveness. You bring up an excellent point on mosquito protection. Using the ZeroBreeze inside the minivan can help you stay cool while keeping the windows closed, thus avoiding mosquitoes and convenient to do light meal prep and eat comfortably. Overall, I'm very happy with the AC addition and I wouldn't do vanlife without it. It makes sleeping at night so much more comfortable and even during the day in direct sunlight, I'll turn it on full blast directly on me to blow some cool air and it's pretty nice.

Awesome build. How do you use the stock DVD player without draining battery without running car ?
@mjspiess
@mjspiess 8 күн бұрын
Thanks! That’s a great question! To use the stock DVD player without draining the car battery, you can link a male-to-male cigarette lighter cord from your EcoFlow to the outlet on the van. This setup will feed a constant 12-13V back to the car battery, ensuring it stays charged while you enjoy your DVD player. Once both ends are plugged in, turn the key to ACC and you'll see watts being used from the EcoFlow verifying that the van’s battery is receiving power from the EcoFlow. This method will keep your car battery charged and allow you to use the DVD player without running the engine. Enjoy your movie time! If you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

@@mjspiess sounds good! Thinking more about this entire topic. I've watched hundreds of van videos and never seen this mentioned. @@derek2gloves That’s an interesting observation! I came up with the idea after seeing car chargers that use the 12v power outlet. The Town & Country & Caravan as a constant 12v port and ACC 12v port. Either will work, but the ACC port would need to have the key in ACC position. Using an EcoFlow portable power bank in this way can indeed be a game-changer for van life. By using the male-to-male plug, you can run your car’s vents, radio, and interior lights off the power bank while also charging it with solar panels. This setup can help you save on your vehicle’s battery and fuel, making your travels more sustainable and efficient. I also travel with a portable jump box just in case.

To remove the fuel hose, you need to separate the legs of the red/blue clip from below (you may not be able to see them) and then it should unlock and slide away from the hose. The white clip legs are then free to expand and separate when you try to pull the hose off. Neither the red or white clips need to be completely removed from the fuel hose.

What is the license test you're refering to? Is it ASE? Im in colorafo, im not sure if it matters, but i havent heard of a license test for mechanics. Ive been doing mobile mechanics since 2020 but im tired of working hard to give my money to a tech guy in another state that knows nothing about cars. Also ive noticed they are all about the bottom line. I like to build a relationship with my customers and i feel like even the new large mobile companies dont appreciate that. Also, i love having contact with my customers, when i was working in the shop they hid all the mechnics in the corner and i never got to talk to my customers. My mobile customers really appreciate being able to talk to the person fixing their car. Anyway im ranting and just want to say thank you for your video and your advice. Much love 😊

It sounds like you're really passionate about your work and building strong relationships with your customers. That's fantastic! 😊 Regarding the license test, it was through the State of Michigan. It's much easier than the ASE certification, but if you are ASE certified in Michigan, it superceeds the state tests. In Colorado, there is no specific state requirement for a license to work as a mobile mechanic. However, obtaining certifications like the ASE can enhance your credibility and job prospects, but I wouldn't bother. You will need a business license to operate legally. It's clear you have a lot of passion for your work, and your customers are lucky to have someone who cares so much about their experience. I can certainly relate and my customers really appreciate the pictures and videos I show them. Keep up the great work, and best of luck with your future endeavors! Much love back to you! 🚗🔧❤

@mjspiess

Hmmm, that is a good question. I'll have to check my records on my other laptop. I don't recall applying for a repair facility license, but I do pay an annual fee to opperate. I'll check my records and get back to you. I reviewed the application process and it does not look familiar. At the time, I probably didn't think I had to because I didn't really have a facility. Even though your repairs occur at customers’ locations, apparently the repair facility license is still necessary. It’s a regulatory requirement to ensure accountability, proper record-keeping, and consumer protection. So, even without a physical facility, obtaining the license allows you to operate legally and maintain transparency with your clients.

An alternative idea for the bread pan sink is steam pans, also known as table pans, hotel pans, etc. They seem to have a few different names but they're all the same thing. The best thing about those is that they come in standard sizes (full, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, etc) and three different depths (2.5", 4" and 6"), giving you a lot of options to fit your requirements. And since it's a standard, there's a lot of manufacturers making them. And they're available in both plastic and stainless steel from some of those companies.

Whether you’re designing a unique sink or working on another DIY project, steam pans can be a practical and cost-effective solution. Thanks for sharing this tip! 😊👍

@mjspiess
@mjspiess Ай бұрын
It’s great that you successfully replaced the cabin air filter in your Honda Insight! As for the glove box latch issue, here are some pointers based on experiences shared by other Insight owners: Latch Alignment: Check if the glove box is properly aligned. Sometimes, the screws that fasten the hinges at the left and right back corners can loosen or be misaligned when reassembly, causing misalignment of the latching mechanism. Loosen the screws just enough to allow some adjustment, then tighten them back up while holding the position. Rubber Nubs: Ensure that you’re not missing the two rubber nubs on the inside of each side of the glove box. These nubs dampen vibration and help stabilize the box. Latch Mechanism: If the latch itself is causing the issue, consider replacing it. Some Insight owners have successfully installed latches from other Honda models (like the Civic) with minor adjustments. Keep the latch of your Insight for the key code engraved on it, and transfer it to the new latch if needed. Remember, small adjustments can make a big difference in getting that glove box to latch smoothly. Good luck! 😊

I have never clocked it, but in general, it will lower the temperature 10-15 degrees at night. As long as you're not in direct sunlight during the day, you'd see a drop, but probably more like 5-10 degrees. I've left it on full blast for my dog during the day, but only for a few hours on a hike where he wasn't allowed. With my EcoFlow Delta 1300, it would last 5-6 hours on full blast, so I always use the sleep mode where it lasts 10-11 hours to have some juice to run my portable fridge too. It's very good at removing humidity, which you wont' experience as much in Texas. Check FB Marketplace for a used one or an EcoFlow Wave. If you're sleeping by youself, consider a single sleeper setup: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gK6mfrSGybHHZ5c.htmlsi=wklVM7G2h93UA2b0 Sleeping during the day could be rough, but if you park in the shade and start with a full charge each morning, you should be good. I've slept in crazy high, humid conditions and I got cold at night with it on sleep mode. I didn't know how humid it was until I opened the door. I was shocked how sticky it was. It will for sure be better than nothing or just a fan. It gets mixed reviews, but I'm very satisfied with the ZeroBreeze.

You could buy a garden sprayer with a hand pump to fill the water chamber with compressed air... they come with a sprayer head..This would make a great little shower.

This is something else I have considered. I'd like to have an outdoor shower and also an awning for shade would be a nice addition. Opening the hatch works well for now for shade.

Please look into investing in a chest microphone due to the poor sound quality especially when you are away from the camera. Thanks.

Where are you from I love your simple set up. How much would you charge to do a build
@mjspiess
@mjspiess 2 ай бұрын
I am from Lansing, MI. Thanks! It would depend on how many extra details you would want in your build, but I think I'd probably start around $500 for the most basic couch/bed build for parts and labor. If you wanted drawers and a table/sink, it would be extra for each additional feature.

You'll get tired of wasting money on kitty litter eventually. Either get cedar chips from the pet bedding section or pellet bedding for horses. Tractor supply or walmart

Last one 😊 my van doesn't have storage "sump" under the bed like you do. Would i be better putting drawers out the back as well as the front or is there any benefit for lift up rear panel if there isn't a lot of height / depth under it for storage?
@mjspiess

The bed is designed to be as low to the floor as possible while remaining level, so the front end is about 8.5" tall while the rear end ends up being nearly level with the rear hatch opening. In order to get drawers out the rear, you'd need to raise the whole bed system up, but then when you sit in couch mode, your head would likely hit the roof unless you're very short. I'm 6'1" and my head nearly hits the roof now while sitting on the foam padding. You'd have to sit on varying heights and see if you could optimize a perfect height for you and storage/drawers out the back.

Thanks a million for solving my problems. Trying to figure how not to lose all the width of my van as I'll be solo 80% of the time. Single is brilliant. Didn't think of it and great to see it working so well. Questions.😊 What width is the single? I was going to try 12mm ply but now considering 9mm.. Might this be ok? I was thinking about making the backrest piece 20"" deep to allow more space when in couch mode. My vehicle isnt as long as Nicks car . Finally.. does it matter how long the two individual platform pieces are , as long as the final length fits? Thank you.. You're a treasure👍 To have option of turning it into a double i was thinking of adding a piano hinge along one length and having a flip out piece.

You're welcome! I loved my single sleeper setup! It was very roomy all things considered. The single width was 30" wide to allow you to keep the rear single chair in place. 9mm should be OK for a single sleeper setup. I went with 1/2" just to be safe. The couch backrest piece is 16-3/4" deep now, so yours would actually be longer. The two individual platform pieces only matter if you want one end to hinge up at a specific spot. This design is measured based on the rear storage area. The piano hinge idea is cool. That seems like it could work to easily turn into a double sleeper. The other edge of the van could have various legs or a ledge for the platform to fold out onto.
