Thank you for this! We generate an enormous amount of leaf and grass clippings from around the yards at the Farm. I would very much like to incorporate windrows into our processes...so rather than just piling these materials into the woods...where it's creating some incredible organic material by the way...we'd like to set up a system where we can easily store them in the woods on mobile trailers, and then pull those trailers up to the windrow piles for composting. Having a windrow chopper/turner would also be an incredible plus for us.

If the charcoal is left on the surface as mulch won’t it dry out and wash away?

That’s funny you said the open manure lagoon smelled. We got some dairies by my town and it’s just another smell that smells like home. It’s like the smell of cut alfalfa or corn it’s just part of the valley. What’s funny though is our town and others has open lagoons for human waste haha. It’s a mile out of town but the geese go there. Maybe that’s why I’ve never wanted to hunt geese haha.

Don't you think using biochar as green roof material can be hazardous ? How would you make it perfectly safe ?

If you start with a wrong premise, you draw a wrong conclusion. I am a fan of charcoal use, but the insane mania over fossil fuel usage is just stupid.

Are you promoting the use of biochar for home gardeners who have reasonably healthy soil? I understand the science behind the use of biochar and I've only been able to find several peer-reviewed studies that concluded the use of biochar in barren soils produces measurably-improved results. I've yet to find anything remotely scientific that it is worthwhile using in normally-healthy soils, nor have I found any successful commercial growers that use the material. Of course, I read and heard many anecdotal claims that it produces measurably-improved results. The good thing about biochar for your average home grower is that it does no harm.

Nice talk. We have been growing Chinese chestnuts in a small orchard for about 30 years in mid. Missouri. One day, I took a minute at flowering time and mentally counted 14 different insects on a tree, tiny native bees, several different butterflies, flies, beetles, some I couldn't identify, and our favorite of them, the "fireflies" also appear at bloom time at night just as we start to smell the flowers. As you stated, demand is always good enough to sell what we can produce. For an example, we tried, as an experiment/ data collection this year, putting 100% of a single 30 yr old seedling's crop up online. Priced cheaply @ $4 lb, (and customer also paid shipping costs via priority flat rate) the tree generated $520 worth of sales. 130# were sold as soon as they hit the ground. We grow Eaton and Qing as our main cultivars, but also have 8 or 9 others as well and seedlings too. Unlike our pecans and walnuts, the chestnuts bear every year. Only pruning, mowing and watering is required here. We haven't used fertilizer for many years, though it would probably increase tree vigor.

does the biochar has more surface area base on its burn time, burn temperature? what are the differences? also can you simply just add biochar to poultry manure without any other ingredient to create a great soil amendment, or what else do you need?
@dudeitsamy1210
@dudeitsamy1210 3 жыл бұрын
Biochar surface area depends on the material you are using to turn into biochar. Eg. A corn stalk would have less than a block of wood at the same size. Only other ingredient needed when using chicken litter and biochar is time and I'd say moisture.
