I agree than a bell skiver is an important tool for anyone serious about production in a leather workshop. People overthink this machine and even when it works for them it is still misunderstood. The relationship between the blade and the presser foot offset is critical and even with a sharpened blade poor results will occur when not right. After every bit of sharpening you need to move the blade back to the sweet spot, which is quite close to the vertical plane off the front face of the presser foot Agonizing over the burr can cause damage and unnecessary wear to the blade and the user. Keep your hands away as much as possible and grind only as much as needed. Getting totally rid of the sharpie mark removes way more material than needed, YMMV. The grinding wheel needs to be dressed often as this keeps the grinding face clean and fresh & sharp grit grinds better with less heat and almost no burr. Less material needs to be removed from the bell knife than expected to restore sharpness. I rarely need to use the honing rod as for most of my typical uses a light touch of the grinding wheel restores the bell knife back to sharpness. A blade with a slight burr cuts leather better than a smooth, no burr blade. Some materials require some finesse but for most upholstery and other chrome tans getting the blade to presser foot offset relationship right will go a long way to ensure good and consistent skives.

One thing I couldn't get correct with mine was that after sharpening, you need to position the blade in a way that is slightly tilted down and away from the roller wheel. That way the roller has clearance to pull the leather through. I could not for the life of me figure out why I had to pull the leather through the blade with my hands.

Sounds like you didn’t get the burr off from the inside and it was catching on the roller. Make sure it’s smooth on the inside (make sure the machine is OFF when touching the inside of the blade with your fingers)

I dont know anything about cutting stingray, but generally it is for som reason easyer to cut leather form the grain side than from the flesh side (if you cut with a knife). This is why leather protective gear, that is supposesed to provide cut resistance like gloves and shoes, often have the flesh side turned out. Great trick with the medical sheers anyway.

@@WillHodges I found a few redditors in the bladesmith subreddit. My first was a Japanese chisel style knife made from aeb-l steel that was cryogenically tempered is my favorite. It stays sharp longest of all of my blades. I also had another bladesmith from that sub make a set of m4 steel. Great knives but very hard to sharpen. The ibex are a good compromise. Easy to maintain but very sharp and durable.

@@WillHodges I recently acquired a forge and started making awl blades. I was buying different blades from Barnsley and sons in the UK. I have gone from leather goods like bags etc to making footwear. Awl blades(good ones) are hard to find in America. But that venture has led into knives and I've made a few so far that have turned out decent. Anyway, keep up the good work with the videos. They are great.
