Wow, never knew the Lotus Carlton had 377 bhp! Thought it was in the high 200's. I did hear of some commotion about the car back in the day.... now I know why! Never had a Carlton myself. But did have a string of mk2, mk3 Cavalier CDi's which I loved. I did have a bog standard 140 bhp 2.5 Senator. For such a big car, it was so easy to drive and parking with it's long bonnet was easy too! The straight 6 engine was a thing of beauty and it's racy sound was very pleasing. In the Senator, I had the gauntlet thrown at me at some traffic lights, by some younger Citroen pocket rocket in the 2nd lane. 2nd and eventually 3rd gear had him in the distant dust behind me lol!

Thought it was nothing modern and almost dated the moment it I noticed it on the roads (as a 7yr old in 73). The shape made me think top heavy for corners. We had one 4 years later and it was wallowy with bad lean on corners. The 1.8 engine had a bit of pull, but hardly excitable! I was offered a very cheap Ital estate in 86 and flatly refused it! This one was one car from the era of British bland cars. But BL and Vauxhall did launch some moderately eye pleasing cars from the 80's onwards. Ford held the crown of bland small and family cars for most of the last 50 years! Even the last Fiesta was just yuk!

The TT was not only remarked for it's Bauhaus styling. You can put several models of different brands against the TT and you will quickly see, that cars from across all brands before the TT looked different, than the ones that came after. The sloping roof line, the high "wrist-line", no visible bumpers, no chrome applications whatsoever, wheelarches that stood out and finally using panel gaps as geometrical styling lines - all of these things were done before, but only widely used after the TT came out as the big success it was. It completely changed car styling for everything that came after, imho, rightfully so. With normal cars easily reaching the same speed with more practicality at the same time, the TT was doomed. The new Alpine took over all the strengths from the TT and put in some other factors like ultra-lightweight and the unique styling.

06:55 The engine is still 2.9 litres. Its 2946 cc. It was modified by Porsche however and upped the power to 207 if I remember correctly. After 2005, there was a version with VVT and 211 bhp.

Actually the VW Phaeton was an incredible car. I had the privilege of having one of the W12 cars for a few days before the car hit the market. The performance was incredible. The fit and finish was more Bentley than Audi, MB or BMW. Unless you had the pleasure of seeing one of these cars or better yet driving one, it’s easy to criticize. Further, if VW loyalists wanted luxury, they only had Audi, MB or BMW as options. It’s too bad the Phaeton gets such a bad rap. Its was an incredible car.

A friend of mine had one of these (early models) at the same time I had my 2nd generation Ford EXP. I couldn't believe the amount of leg room! This was a TRUE sports car! Toyota really did a really great job.

When I was a kid, I had a yellow model car of the Smart Roadster. I loved that thing, and I STILL think it looks good... I haven't found any oictures online of the toy I had, however. But I have a soft spot for it, since it's a childhood car of mine in a way.

I had Starions, Eclipses a Stealth a Galant and still have my 1998 3000GT still looks/drives like new, only had 1 warr claim a Yuasa Batt early failure. 80s and 90s were some great cars and the most bang for buck. I still miss my Starions mostly my ESI-R and Conquest TSI. (and before Mitsu my 70 Road Runner)

Double rear seat thing was an extra on C6 (Lounge Pack option) at circa £2,500. Also ours was a 2007 it had DRL's. Think the first production car in the UK sold with them? (They did not come out in 2010) Just saying.

I have had a 740 GL Saloon, 760 Turbo Saloon and 850 GLT Estate. Loved the 760 (fast) and can't say enough about 850 (beauty). 740??? Well, she was possessed..LOL. Seriously, good car but no comparison to the other two. Went to Audi / VW afterwards as more convenient & numerous dealer/service centers here in States & can get cars (instead of just SUVs) with turbo engines. Still love Volvo & really, mostly all European cars over US Big Three cars anyway.

I never owned one, but the Citroën BX diesel was a nippy motor with excellent MPG and entertaining road holding. It was practical, too. I've not seen a BX on the road for at least 20 years.

I have the opportunity to borrow one of these cars from a friend of mine back in the day when the C6 was still new and shiny. It was necessary for me to drive to the other side of the state (I live in Victoria Australia). It was necessary for to drive to a town called Mildura on a family emergency. Mildura is a seven hour drive from where I live in Melbourne. I basically drove from Melbourne to Madeira transacted my small personal business but back in the car filled it up at the BP petrol station and drove back to Melbourne. One hour on the ground and 14 solid hours in the car. I think it's the longest drive I've ever done in my life in one go. The C6 was a truly incredible car to drive it had a ride better than any other vehicle I've ever driven and when I stepped out of the car I did so refreshed and comfortable without even a hint of stress on my back. It's a tragedy that the C6 didn't take off it was a truly Landmark vehicle.

Your articles are always very interesting and highly enjoyable to watch. One small thing however, when quoting power ratings for vehicles and fuel consumption it might also be useful to mention metric equivalents rather than just mpg and horsepower. This would no doubt benefit the other 6 billion or so people who live outside the United Kingdom.

As a real Citroën afficionado I feel it's a mistake to believe that the C6 is the successor of the XM, this is definitely NOT the case! The line goes from DS to CX to XM to C5. They all have a Berline and Break model, while the SM and C6 only have the Berline model. Personally I believe the Breaks are the best (and most beautiful) models of all these cars. B.t.w. the C5 is also available in a very Exclusive version with a V6 petrol or Diesel engine and all kind of extra features. Unfortunately the C5 phase 1 and 2 are the latest versions by default equipped with hydro-pneumatic suspension. Citroën stopped unfortunately producing the hydro-pneumatic suspension cars. For me the newer Citroëns and the DS brand are not real Citroëns anymore, they could as well put the Peugeot badge on all of them.

I was working at the DCTC headquarters at the time this car was rolling out and bought one of the first models. I knew the project manager quite well. There actually was a Hemi version developed that was faster than the SRT and would have lowered the price. Daimler killed it fearing slk competition. I saw the car myself! I loved the car. I wish I had kept it. Too bad Chrysler didn't do the car alone.
