Hey! Im trying to fix the flash on my d3100. When the flash is up the camera will focus but never take a photo. Putting it down and turning it off in the settings lets it take photos properly. Theres very little information about this particular problem online so i wanted to ask how you would go about trying to diagnose the problem? I really wish i knew how the firing mechanism worked so i could follow it to pinpoint the problem but the service manjal was no help with that. Thanks in advance! Your video is the reason i had the guts to attempt the repair!

I don't own the 3100, so I cant say exact, however I do own a lots (20 or better...never counted :) ) of DSLR Nikons....tell me about your camera settings and environment during your test? Are you testing in a well lit room, dark room? what is the subject your shooting? What lens are you using, have you tried different lenses if available? Do you have flash assist turned on or off (the red or white light that shoots out of the body), where is your focus point center or auto? What mode are you in or have tried (P,A,M,S)? What setting is your camera set for, for the flash to pop (1/10....1/25....1/50....1/100, etc.), what is your flash set for (red eye, auto, front, rear)? What's the status of the battery (flat/mid/full) when testing, how old is the battery? Do you have another Nikon body to test on? So many things could cause a issue similar to this and it not necessarily a bug in the system. I'll see if I can replicate your issue if there is enough input from you and if I can emulate your environment....now that I think...I just may have the 3100....I bought the wife a camera last year, and that might be it??? ~Jack, VEG

@@VintageElectronicsGeek I've tried it in every mode but Manual mode is what I've tried the most test. The shutter speed can't go past 1/200 with the flash open because the flash can't work with any faster speed. I've tried 3 different lenses 2 are Nikkor afs lenses and one is a Tamron zoom lens. And I dont think I've had flash assist on but when focusing the light in the body does light up. Focus point is in the center but I've tried other focus methods to no success. I think it might be something to do with the flash circuit of the capacitor itself. I don't have a multimeter with the option to test the capacitance but Im tempted to touch the exposed wire to see if I'll get shocked or not

2:11 did you just... say "1.665 WORKING hours"? I hope that was a slip up because that's Watt hours, not working battery life. That's 3.7v * 450mAh = 1.665Wh. Sorry, not a very good electronics "geek", mistaking Wh for anything other than watt hours...

Don - I have had a chance to see it in action playing with the amp since this video was posted and it works great! My A/B switch has a center ground position and a few times I forgot about it and parked there and TX'd, the hi SWR light came on and the amp did not TX. I have also had it come on for hi temp as I had been running it with out a fan on it....I now have one on it...it too shut down the amp until safe. ~Jack, VEG

Depending on your area, it may or may not be active, check these cool sites for activity and use the filters to select your band and mode. pskreporter.info/pskmap.html & www.dxwatch.com ~Jack, VEG

@@VintageElectronicsGeek I dove deep into these older digital cameras over the past few months and it's been a lot of fun. I started with the Sony DSC-F707 because that was my first digital camera that I always regretted selling when I went into Nikon APS-C DSLRs. When I saw how inexpensive these old cameras are I started picking up some models I'd wanted but never gotten: Sony DSC-F828 & R1 and Nikon 8700 & D200. Then I found some other interesting models to snag: Nikon 990 & 995, Canon Powershot Pro 1, and finally this Sony D770. Many of them have really surprised me with their image quality, especially the Sony F828. It has become one of my favorites to shoot now and it's easy to get into infrared photography with it due to a hack of the Night Shot feature. If you like 5MP and under cameras, check out a Sony F707 if you haven't. It's still a very capable camera and has the fun infrared/night vision capability.

The program change solenoid is drawing a lot of current as shown by the lights dimming when you hit the button Jack. If its not moving far enough to reposition the head to the next track its probably a mechanical issue with old grease. Looking forward to seeing more of this unit!! Take care and all the best, George

My main man Jack, so good to see you back in action. Was beginning to think you disappeared from the face of the earth. That or Mrs. VEG would not let you come out and play anymore. LOL Interesting video. Those 8 track players were notoriously picky when they were new and given that both the mechanism as well as the media is getting a bit old, well they tend not to perform as well as they once did. Make sure the foam strips are in place on the tapes themselves, these are usually MIA on old carts. The solenoid should move a ratchet type device which makes the head go up and down. That in itself is a pretty funky setup. Oh and those gooey belts, I haven't seen any like that on an 8 track but several on cassette machines. :)
