I am mad at you for owning that snakewood SW. Are you kidding me. Grail cue!! Im making myself a snakewood and macassar ebony cue currently because they are so hard to find.

Glad you appreciate that cue. It’s a rare one for sure. Haven’t reviewed these comments for years! Still play with the gaboon on gaboon red to this day. Sold the DPK and sold the Snakewood cue for a ridiculous price. Have all the rest plus a couple more. Never lost a bet when buying a SW, only lost a bet for not playing good pool at times!

I myself own a SW and have some buddies that own them. IMO, just my opinion. The market for these cues makes little logical sense. Playing wise, They deflect like crazy w their 13mm maple shafts! A modern professional that is used to any type of cue technology would have a bitch of a time adapting to one. They are known not to appear to roll straight or technically are not 100% straight. Any cue that you buy in the world that you pay thousands of dollars for--If it doesn't roll straight or is not straight, it's going to be returned or highly devalued. NOPE, not SW, perfectly acceptable to wobble. Probably one of the best cues to collect, only goes up in value and very easy to sell. Might be approaching a 15 year waiting list. Interesting heritage....

Patrick ; think you for the Southwest "show & tell " ...Hope to add one to my modest collection someday . I read all the comments and it's always odd to me how some donkeys can't wait to begin their bad-mouthing of someone else's preferences . I listened to every word of your nice presentation , ( twice ) ,and not ONCE did I hear you urge anyone to buy a Southwest ; nor indeed , that they would make you a better player. And yet , some cannot contain themselves very long before the nonsensical "jibber / jabber" seems to well up and overflow their keyboard. Seems it's a geometric anomaly ,......"anybody anywhere can pick up an $18 dollar house cue and beat any multi-dollar cue bearing person who ever walked into a pool room " ! Again , thank you. Regards

Dennis orcollo loved his Southwest cue. then it warped because thats what they do.unless you control the temp real good. they will warp. they are not cored so thats a problem. also the cuemaker Jerry Franklin is dead. No more original Southwest cues. If its not a Franklin its not a Southwest. Lauri trys to carry on the Southwest name. Finding a original Southwest cue is hard to do. Who is going to verify if its original ? Jerry Franklin passed away. Paul Drexler maybe,or Ernie that makes Ginacues.

What makes a Southwest cue so special. I've never owned one but I know their reputation is top notch! One day hopefully even if it's a simple curly maple one.
@JohnDoe-ur3tr2 жыл бұрын
A big part of it is artificially limited supply which drives up demand. The waitlist is like 10-15 years long, so the end product can be easily flipped at any time for a lot more of their initial value even when used. Outside of that, they are a great cuemaker with a long heritage. There are IMO several other cuemakers however that make just as quality cues like Searing, Owen (Shutz), Olivier, Showman, Coker, Nitti etc.

you know why we have a lot of best filipino players? because here in Philippines we focus on developing skills not cue aesthetics. it is how you play not how nice cue you have. imagine going to a pool hall with those thousand dollar cues then a hustler beat your azz using bar cues... a thousand dollar cue will not add or help developing your skills. even you put gold inlays and diamond

why are ebony nose so sought after? Whats the difference between Goncalo alves nose?
@patrickjuhlin58974 жыл бұрын
Mark Halvorsen sorry for late reply. Ebony is a dense heavier wood that resonates unlike other woods. For example: gaboon ebony is 60lbs per cubic foot and goncalo is 57lbs per cubic foot. I find that having an ebony nose between the handle and the shaft makes the stiffer shaft play better and gives great feedback in your hand. My view is totally subjective but after playing with dozens of cues, custom and production, I find I like the ebony nosed ones. I also like the connection ebony has with musical instruments, there are a lot of woodwind instruments made out of ebony.

DO THESE CUES HAVE SMALLER DIAMETER BUTTS? THE BACK, NEAR BUTT SLEEVE, DOES NOT GET VERY WIDE IN DIAMETER?
@patrickjuhlin58974 жыл бұрын
From what I understand southwest cues vary in butt diameter depending on the weight and wood combination. The Southwest cue I have that was made for Francine Massey (Mike Massey’s wife) has a slimmer butt. 1.25 inches is the standard for most cues at the bottom of the butt section.

@MrADVANCEDTEK7 жыл бұрын
Nice cues. What are their weights and joint construction. I like a wood to wood feel. My shafts are different for one pocket to eight ball as are my ferrules, soft to hard and harder. It's tough trying to find certain types of melamine rods. I used to have a small stock of melamine that finished with a slight translucent edge that was a great all-around playing material but can't find it no more. Oh well. I to love the ebony fronts the hit the sound it never gets old. Have you played with Paka wood? Essentially a resin inpregnated wood that's been forged into a harder heavier wood. I had a Newport cue made with it. Very heavy but hardly any vibration hitting the cue ball. Very unigue hit.
@patrickjuhlin58974 жыл бұрын
MrADVANCEDTEK and LittleHands never played with Paka and I don’t prefer injected woods because it defeats the characteristics of the wood and how it vibrates. I love southwest because they don’t completely core their cues. The 3/8 11 pin goes directly into the ebony nose and not a maple core. I think that makes the difference.

@patrickjuhlin58977 жыл бұрын
The last two cues were made prior to 1996 when South West started putting cactus logos on their pins.
@patrickjuhlin58974 жыл бұрын
Pre 1995-1996 their cues didn’t have a cactus logos on them. Hence the term “pre-date Southwest cues” means a they’re most likely made prior to 1996 when Jerry Franklin was alive and participating in the cue making process.

Ricardo just because someone has a custom cue does mean they are a great player...Reyes plays with a 15 dollar cue...it’s made in Japan...most cue collectors have a infatuation with woods and craftsmanship...just because I play with 2k dollar cue does not make me the best in the world

I like winning regardless of opponents cue, that goes without saying. I like high end cues because craftsman/artists who make them create a functional piece of artwork in my opinion. If you dive a little deeper into the cue making world you might be surprised at how much goes into making a nice cue.
