It used to fly to Suriname , former Dutch Guyana. The passengers and crew would spend the night at the palace hotel. There is a beautiful picture of this flying giant on the Suriname river , made by the famous FEMALE photographer Augusta Curiiel. Who died in 1937.

34:45 On the Lae raid, the TBDs with torpedoes were so heavy that they barely cleared the tips of the mountains. In addition, the TBDs were so slow, their escorts had difficulty flying slow enough to stay with the TBDs, and caused fuel concerns for the Wildcats.

Obsolete? If an aircraft can carry a torpedo that can sink a ship;it does a function. Compare the TBD-1 to the Swordfish biplane the British used to attack & disable the Bismark and Italian fleet at Toronto (sinking/disabling 3 battleships, 1 heavy cruiser, 2 destoyers). These "Obsolete" aircaft did a lot of damage; losing two of 21 Swordfish but also shot down 2 italian fighters. The skill of aircrew is a big factor. Brewster Buffalos were "Obsolete" but Finnish pilots shot down a lot of Russian planes with them. The Zero had superior performance but no armour or self sealing tanks, the best pilots got killed leaving novices to fight.

5:54 not really the issue, as it'd take a sustained, relatively high temperature source of heat to cause the magnesium to catch on fire and stay on fire. it's because it was more expensive to manufacture and machine, as well as it being brittle and otherwise considerably weaker.
@helterskelter416Күн бұрын
also 6:25 the diagram you have shows it can move through a range of *9* degrees, moving 3 degrees up or 6 degree down from the initial position.

12:40 -_- magnesium's flammability risk, especially in this application, is extremely low, even if it's considered "highly flammable". it takes quite a bit to set it on fire, and it will melt at a much lower temp than it will burn, so unless it's contained it's not an issue. i get sensationalizing to make it more entertaining, but this is just annoyingly misinforming.

22:02 correction! the nazi paratroopers taking the bridge at rotterdam did not employ assault boats but used captured dutch uniforms to walk across and murder the bridge guards when they got in range. this war crime will not be covered up by statements made in this video. other than that, great video rex

The back and forth you and Drachinfel could have about Billy Mitchell and his “escapades” should be a debate that happens some time soon as honestly from what I can tell you seem in favor of Mitchell and his antics whilst Drach seems to almost despise him evident polar opposite opinions in other words…

Hi Rex, another great video. Keep them coming.. just one question., any idea why the aircraft shown at the 13.26 and 18.54 mark has differing tail and fuselage numbers. No biggie of you don't know, just something I noticed. Hi from Australia.

Great plane, BUT Bf-109 with drop tank could solve their range problems. Falke was expensive on resources, while Bf-109 was from ground up designed to be as cheap and simple as possible. Much maligned Me-110 earned its keep being good night fighter (could carry 3 man crew, heavy armament, schräge musik, AI radar, even the less than stellar maneuverabilily was an asset, it was steady bird to fly with instruments in 0 visual visibility.

TBD looks relatively modern but was not an especially good aircraft. The Fairey Swordfish looked positively ancient but was actually a heavy lift STOL that could fly when nothing else could operate. Bismarck was surprised by the Swordfish attack because nobody would ever fly in that weather.
