Some of the nicer shells I keep, and I leave a lot behind. Usually after multiple days of shelling I have bagfulls of shells I don't really need and return those to the beach.

My first impression wasn't too negative. I thought it's pretty normal for a commercialized island in the US east coast, but I do agree Sunset is fancier. It is the best in the state for shelling though!

Cone snails in florida are not capable of seriously harming humans. Plus, they are basically never found alive on the beach, they live in slightly deeper water. I hope that clears things up, thanks for watching! :)

Does Holden Beach act like Sanibel? Do you go out at low tide with a headlamp at all times of the year? I would like to go shelling here but I've never been. I'd love to find some of those baby ears! Or shark eyes. I love them too. I would have went bananas with so many of them! The wentletraps are awesome!
@shellstories
@shellstories 26 күн бұрын
Holden is definitely the Sanibel of NC. The shell piles there that I've seen (particularly around the pier) are reminiscent of what you'd see in SWFL. I went out mostly before sunrise (winter months) in the dark and had really good luck. I haven't posted the video(s) yet, but my last beach walk of my trip there was literally one of the most spectacular shelling days I've ever had, definitely on par with post storm shelling on Sanibel. I would absolutely recommend giving this area a try! I would say go during the off season to find the best stuff, and to not get ripped off on rental home/hotel prices. Also, it's the only beach where you can consistently find those extinct NC sea biscuits, so it's really one of the more unique beachcombing experiences out there!

I'm dying to know where on Holden Beach did you go? I was out there Sunday morning, at 3am, I walked about 2 miles south of the pier, and granted I found great shells, but did not find a single welk and no piles of shells like you show in your video. I only ask, because I would absolutely love to find some welks. Love your videos! Shell on, my Shelling friend.
@shellstories

This was a pretty long stretch of beach west of the Holden pier (I walked up almost all the way to it and turned around then). However this video was filmed a few months ago during winter, and conventional wisdom has it that shells are more abundant that time of year due to favorable ocean currents being more prolific. I imagine in the summer with tourist season it can be more difficult to find stuff, you just need to hit the right day. Thank you for watching and commenting!
