That new color timing doesn't look horrible and I can certainly understand what Friedkin (RIP) was going for but it's still revisionism and not a cool thing to do to the original DP. Restorations should not fall into this trap. That being said, I'm glad Friedkin was so open about what he did and why. Not only is this featurette really informative, it's a great historical document for this particular color grade/restoration (and we don't get many of those). It's also surprising the technician didn't point out to him that although the Melville technique was really cool for its time, the look he was trying to achieve could have been done better by de-saturating certain colors (as others have already pointed out). This technique introduces nasty color bleeds (look at the collar at 9:53) because the color-layer as been de-focused and pushed to extreme saturation. Still a cool technique I might apply to certain montage projects, but not the most adapted to this restoration...

I appreciate this look into Friedkin's (RIP) process but it was ultimately a misfire and I think he eventually realized it thanks to Owen Roizman. It made everyone look like they were running a fever or something. It's the perfect example of just one step too far. The French Connection didn't need to look like this. The performances and setting were more than enough to sell the grim tone. Anything else is just a distraction.

He repeated the process, or at least a similar one, for the exorcism scene in The Exorcist. So he apparently didn’t realize it was a misfire.

@@wright96d Are you talking about the new 4K (I haven't picked it up, yet)? I've been hearing that the picture quality takes a nose dive in that scene on the 4K but no one has stated whether or it's in line with what was already done and visible on the older Blu-ray. Because the color timing change by itself has been there on The Exorcist since long before he did this to FC. Just curious.

He was incensed, for sure. But. You'll notice that the studio put out another version pretty quickly that this time had *both* Friedkin and Roizman collaborating/approval and it looks infinitely better. So bit of an urban legend. Billy was properly chastened.

Good thing i watched The remastered version. Funny thing is that Mann did with Thief a complete change of color and it worked, here i see not so well, because what is the point of reimagining the movie that is basically shot like a documentary representing reality by distorting its color to some gloomy desaturated thing...
