True, its possible, Julians Sprungs tank comes to mind, but he has the ecosystem that can process all those NO3/PO naturally... I just think for me I have seen the effect of going skimmer less vs skimmer on the same system and the fish do alot better so I would recommend it for most hobbyist that tend to overstock/overfeed. Can you elaborate on the reducing your nitrates by increasing flow to the weir? I have gotten my NO3 down from 300PPM+ to 50PPM in 8 months. It was a hard process that I can finally create a video for now.. But I did the following, added 100lbs remote sand bed, stopped feeding shrimp, upgraded return pump (turnover), removed 5 turbos, added a ATS, and started dosing Vodka.

@Bfamreef I know they used be readily available but I think a tank raised one would be worth waiting for. the price of $200 seems steep, but they just seem to survive for years compared to other tangs.

@AquariumSurge oh I'm not saying your wrong I have 2 and love them. Most tangs live quite a long time all mine are over 10 years old now. But a great option back when they were $30. Now at $200+ I'm not sure it would be my pick at that price point. Blue or yellow eye kole tang are about $70. And I find them to be just as long lived. Your video is aimed to the newer reefer and I would never advise a $200 fish to someone just starting out.

@Bfamreef yeah I know the prices and availability of all fish are impossible. I really need to find a copper band or fire fish for aiptasia control but it's not an easy find

@phalbaby16 you could get away with not having a skimmer, but if it was me id find away to add a small hang on the back filter with a small skimmer... main reason is I hate waterchanges and without a skimmer you would need to do big ones more frequently. Plus who wants to let there nutrients rise rapidly between waterchanges just to be diluted again. Using a skimmer really helps keeps chemistry stable. Doing big waterchanges will also not help stability

I just sub to your channel. I would not worry about the protein skimmer on your system. Just get good at the other concepts I mentioned and plan for a skimmer when you upgrade. Happy reefing 😊

Once they start reproducing and nothing is eating them they will take over and sting fish and kill corals like zoa.. its a pain! My tank is starting to become like that since all my peppermint shrimp have died. so i need to find a fish to eat them.

Yes 300ppm+... After 8 months long battle finally got them down to 50ppm. Crazy part was waterchanges alone did not help but had to carbon dose, add a scrubber, added a remote sand bed, and removed some turbos....Multiple large waterchanges and finally got a result last night at 50ppm

@andibandi1190 yeah I definitely could use some flow on the bottom. Only thing that's holding me back is I don't want to look at those pipes. Maybe ones things are grown in it won't matter

They can survive a nuclear bomb! They come on LR and coral bases. Honestly I QT every single coral to avoid them.. and somehow my QT has none but they found a way in the tank.. I feel they can remain invisible for months and months before showing themselves.

@AquariumSurge do you quality test with clean water or tank water? That might affect them coming out. Maybe a qt when you do a water change and use the dirty water if you aren't already. (Less than minimum knowledge in this field, I'm just guessing and throwing hypotheticals)

I feel the zoas from my old system must have brought them in somehow,, I am not sure how there must have been slime somewhere but its not a big deal really, having aiptasia is part of the hobby😁Aslong as I dont have any coral parasites I am good

The "fumes" are actually just steam, if you're just using NaOH. Where you'll find more dangerous volatiles is with mixed chemicals (like drain cleaners, etc)... Some things are designed to react cause intense reactions on contact with water. Always good to read labels

@@agxryt First batch I made i think it lost its potency so now just going to mix it and use it within 1 week. I believe using it right after mixing when its steaming destroys aiptasia even when they close up.

Yeah 100% don't recommend this to as a first things.. However, its the only thing that works and actually kills everything to the bare rock.. I think it could be useful for certain areas in the tank with algae issues.

@@AquariumSurge it might have, the water in NaOH solutions react with CO2 in air over time, to form carbonic acid (H2CO3). Then the HO ion (the base, from the lye) steals a proton (an H) from carbonic acid, making H20, bicarbonate ions (HCO3+) and sodium ions (Na-). Your aqueous sodium hydroxide slowly becomes aqueous baking soda (which is a much weaker base). Best to do it fresh!

Because it's used in so much stuff. Calling it a "chemical", while true, might be a bit misleading. It's just sodium bound to hydroxide (HO), they separate into sodium and hydroxide ions in water... But both of those are already minor components of water, as "minerals", and all the hydroxide ion wants to do is pair up with a free hydrogen, to become water. (It's just kinda aggressive about it) It's basically hyper-concentrated mineral water. Which is dangerous, but It's also the original ingredient of soap (aside from the fat). It's used constantly in production, to neutralize acids. It's used to make pretzels, various Chinese dishes. We used to get it from wood ash, in the old days. It's literally everywhere, including in your body. Look at ingredients lists, you'll find it in so many things. Tl;dr it's a "harmful chemical" in the same way that salt is a harmful chemical - in high concentrations. Albeit, quite a bit more feisty.

they also use it to make handmade soap. a reaction called 'saponification' occurs when a water/lye mix is added to an oil - the chemical reaction makes soap

I am dosing Phosphates continuously via Ecotech versa pump. I checked them two weeks ago they were .06ppm. If I stopped dosing they bottom out. Acros tend to look more vibrant when they are 0 but the zoas and acans are an instant indicator phosphates have bottomed out. They do not like to open up when it bottoms out

Maybe I'll make a video soon on carbon dosing with Phosphates. I purchased Phospahate from Amazon for $10 and honestly it may last a lifetime 😆

Hmm. Only fish I added after the tangs was the chromis and none of my tangs bothered them. I think if I added another medium size fish they would probably kill them

Everybody needs a place to hide around Blue, caves and crevices. Defensible positions.

How big is your tank? Honestly I feel Yellow and Purple tangs are bullet proof since they can do well in smaller tanks. The Powders, clowns, achilles, aka acanthurus species are difficult because they need a larger system and really good diet and flow.

depends how bad it is. My yellows got it in a holding tank after 2 years and really took a permanent beating. The purples I didn't do anything special just made sure I fed them good and they healed pretty quickly. Make sure your using good carbon and rinsing it good

@@AquariumSurge and IMO, beware GFO, granular ferric oxide. At least keep it in the back of your mind if all else fails and u use it. Agree with Mr. Surge’s advice. Good water, nori daily, and time. (No GFO for me personally, suspect it could contribute)
