This is not true. The phrase "Divide 30 by half" is at best linguistically imprecise. But if you want to be pedantic 1/2 is "a half" not "half". Similarly, dividing by 2 is defined by the verb "halve". The question did not say "divide 30 by A HALF" which is 30 / 0.5 = 60. It also did not say "HALVE 30" which is 30/2 = 15. It said, "divide by half" provoking the question "Half of what?". What is the whole you are dividing by half? The idea you can simply assume you are dividing by half of 1 is wrong. This means divide 30 by 30's half. which is 30 / 15 = 2 You then add 12 to get to a final answer of 14.

WRONG ANSWER I gave this problem to my hs classes 20 years ago. The correct answer is 534. Rather than leave that 1 banana stranded in the desert, you go from that point, walk forward 1/3 mile, dump some bananas, go back, get the rest, then go forward to the pile. You just traveled 1 mi (1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3). You eat 1 banana, the one that would have been stranded. Then you travel the remaining 466 + 2/3 miles to the market with 1000 bananas, eating 466 along the way, bringing 534 to market.

Actually, the shortest time can be found, without calculating any distances, explicitly. Lets say: T0: time, when the first guy is dropped off the bike, T1: time, which this guy needs to get to the destination, T2: time, for the bike to get back to the third guy, who is already walking toward the destination, T3: time, for the two guys on bike to get to the destination. As you said, they all arrive at the same time. We have the following equations: a) 60 T0 +15 T1 = 300 (the dropped-off guy) b) 15 T0 +15 T2 + 60 T3 = 300 (the picked-up guy) c) 60 T0 - 60 T2 + 60 T3 = 300 (the bike-guy), d) T1 = T2 + T3 (simultaneous arrival) 4 equations, can be solved for T0..3, to obtain the total shortest time: T = T0 + T1 ~ 9,28 h

This fails at step 1 The thief would run off with $700 as that’s more he’d get if he stayed with them $700 > (1000+700+300)/3 Fails at step 2 The thief would run off with $1000 Fails at step 3 for the same reason as step 2 Fails at step 4 for the same reason as step 1 Fails at step 5 as the two would run off with $1,700 Fails horribly at step 6 as one thief would definitely run off with $1000

Before watching for the solution, this is my answer: You need one coin. Drop the coin from the top, time how long it takes to hit the ground, apply the acceleration due to gravity formula, and you get the height. Alternate answer: 50. Take a stack of 50 coins, it doesn't matter what denomination. On a sunny day at a given time, put the stack of coins in a sunny location where it will cast a shadow. Measure the height of the coin stack and the length of the shadow. This gives you two legs of a right triangle; use the Pythagorean theorem and some trigonometry to find the third side and the angles. From here there are any number of ways of using algebra, basic geometry, or trigonometry to find the height. The simplest one would be this: Measure the length of the shadow cast by the building at the same time as the shadow cast by the coin stack. This will give you the ratio of the lengths of the two shadows. Take that factor and multiply it by the height of the coin stack. This will give you the height of the building. Alternate answer three: One coin. Use a high value coin, like a British 5 pound coin or a 5 euro. Go up to the doorman, and offer him the coin as a tip in exchange for telling you the height of the building.

Final Question: If the shopkeeper had to go next door to get change for the 1000 Rs note, where did the next door keeper find money to take back. The First shopkeeper may have had only the 200 Rs he kept from the sale. So he lost 200 Rs that the bag was worth and the 200 Rs change from the sale. Unless the boy next door also took bags to make up his loss, in which case the first keeper lost the 200 for the bag plus the 1000 for the fake note. But there are too may variables in some of these questions like the first one where other patterns are evident. You could have said that the last one was three but "why was it three"?

What if I ask that villager if he/she knows me? He/She probably doesn't know me because I came from far away, so if he/she says "No", he/she's probably saying the truth and I will follow the direction he/she will choose. But if he/she says "Yes", then they don't belong to the group of Honest villagers.

You complicated the explanation unnecessarily. Lets say Carl walks a distance of ‘x’ km until Alex drops Bob to the most optimum point and returns to pick him up after this point, Carl covers the remaining distance i.e. (300-x) km on the bike. Thus the total journey time for Carl is (x/15)+((300-x)/60) hours. Similarly, lets say Alex drops Bob to the most optimum point which is at a distance of ‘y’ km from their uncle’s house. Now, Bob has to covered the distance of (300-y) riding with Alex and ‘y’ walking. Thus the total journey time for Bob is ((300-y)/60)+(y/15) Since total time taken by all 3 is the same, looking at the above one can calculate that x=y. Also, the distance between the point where Alex drops Bob and picks up Carl will be (300-x-y). Or (300-2x), since x=y. Now, Alex has covered all the distance throughout the journey on bike at speed of 60 km/h. The distance travelled by him is (x + y + 3(300-x-y)) or (x + x + 3(300-x-x)), since x=y. This simplifies to (900 - 4x) km. Thus time taken by him is ((900 - 4x)/60) hours. Since we have simplified this time taken by Alex for the whole journey in terms of x, we can equate this by the time taken by Carl for the whole journey as all 3 have started for and reached to their destination simultaneously. Thus, ((900-4x)/60) = (x/15)+((300-x)/60) which simplified as x = 600/7 km Substitute this value in time taken by Carl i.e. (x/15)+((300-x)/60) and you get the total, minimum time they would need to reach their destination as 9.28 hours.
