I noticed this when writing a novel. Sometimes I would incorporate some obscure references which are understandable for me and close friends, but may sound somewhat unusual or unnatural for my native language if seen by an outsider. No coincidence that those exact places were remembered the most by the readers :D

I used to work Front Desk at a Hotel Night Shift, I would have people talk nonsense like this all the time trying to mess with my head. But my Defense was I had a very serious grudge against everyone who walked in the door, because everyone who walked in the Door was trying to create Problems, because IF they Create Problems then Corporate automatically Rewarded people for Bad Behavior. So everyone was MOTIVATED to Create Problems. I used to HATE everyone who walked in the Door in the back of my Mind, to the point of thinking unspeakable thoughts 😁 So I think in order to actually be Manipulated by someone like this, you have to be somewhat Receptive to what they are Saying. You have to be Listening to them and trying to Care about what they are saying. I didn't care AT ALL. I was Vicious. I HATED EVERYONE!! So that was my Defense Mechanism. 😁 But it was BECAUSE of having to deal with this kind of Torment on a Daily Basis for 14 YEARS and not being able to do anything about it. I'm just thankful no one got seriously hurt. 😁
