Easy to imagine this having 609,000 views rather than 609. There's so much integrity and beauty here.

You know what's still crazy about over 60y old Monk Jazz tracks? They're still genius and a pleasure to listen!

This was the opening song to their set at the MIM in Phoenix, Az. on 06/20/24. What a tight veteran group!

Abdullah (Johannes, Dollar) started off playing by ear, mainly, or so I think. S. Africans would know pf this and can say. Discovered by Duke Ellington in 1963 he went on to record for labels such as Enja, Kaz and perhapsmany others. I don't thinkhe appeals overmuch to American sensibilities, but there too, there are always exceptions. Anyway, Abdullah is someone who has taken artistic liberties, but doesn't seem to cheat. A fine example of an artist and human.

I remember taping this off the JP show. Beautiful version where Nico’s idiosyncratic harmonium playing more than compensates for the absence of Cale’s viola. Her vocal is less vulnerable and more strident than the album version. Joyful misery!

Funny how the recording from December 6th in Philadelphia was believed to be the last one! It's a LOT worse quality though, I'm glad this turned up!

Buddy you are definitely the greatest of all times on the drums. I am 53, and my name is Danny Sanders. The first time I saw you was either on the Johnny Carson Show or Buddy Rich-VS-Animal on the Muppets Show. I love you Buddy...

Fun fact: The chart titled Shawnee was originally a Mike Barone chart arrangement written for the Tonight Show band and Buddy liked the chart so he asked if he could get a copy of the arrangement for his big band to perform. I’m not 100% sure of this just something that I remember hearing

Another tune borrowing the chord structure of Ray Noble's "Cherokee" -- like quite a few other compositions. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_jazz_contrafacts lists them, possibly incompletely.
