I always wanted a chunk of rail to use around my shop as an anvil. Never managed to find any.

Hi Dave, Nice, it is interesting to see the workings of a locomotive. Yes, those resistors do the same job the bakes on a vehicle. Need them for going downhill. The plates are stainless steel, so they last as long as the coal dust lets them. We used some similar ones on rail dumpers that roll the cars over to empty them when delivering coal to the power stations or lime to the cement plants, huge amount of energy recovered during the roll back with an empty car as the mass is all on the side where the wheel trucks are. Also, the first time those get to do their job from new there's a huge cloud of smoke as dust and other stuff on the plates burns off when they heat up for the first time. Kind regards, Duncan

Even if you work slowly, all work for the railroad gets completely done; no questions asked.💙

This is a free country. Let the oil workers drill, and the coal miners mine the coal America needs to Work.

Dave want a problem being derail like that. With have odd things to take the wheels off the rail. Here is one fot you. I had a call back a few year's ago. A industry had a high cube boxcar derail in the building in the car well. It was on tangent track and it was pave too top of rail. The problem was the fork lift drive backed into a fileing cabinet on the top of the dock and it fell into the car well. The driver of the fork lift did know he did it. The track mobile drive just pulled the car out of the building and the car got on top of the fileing cabinet and the fileing cabinet derail that hi cube boxcar. What a mess in the building. Great job getting it back on dave.

So the pans at the side are just heat sinks/traps for spillover? Keeping it from hitting moisture and splattering?

Seeing stuff made right after a failure is very satisfying! I remember a few emergency jobs that were super tough, but when they were done and back up & running, it was a great feeling! Getting things back in action quickly and properly is a sign of a skilled crew of people who care. Keep up the awesome work!

The old coon defect! That’s serious you might want to talk with Fred and see what he recommends on this one. It’s rare and potentially dangerous to any rail equipment used on that segment of track 😅

Great video! Regardless of how many solar panels, wind turbines are built. Both sources of electricity will never be able to support the power grid due to their inefficiency and lack of reliability. It takes about 3,000 acres for both solar and wind to generate about 500 megawatts. Add on cloudy days, lack of wind, snow covered solar panels, and shorter hours of daylight during the winter. Both will be no more than helpers for the grid. Europe which has gone further down the path to trying to base their grid on solar and wind have been forced by reality to fire up coal fired power plants which were scheduled to be demolished to keep their power grid functioning. Regarding natural gas firing of power plants. Natural gas is already heavily used for heating homes, buildings, cooking in restaurants, etc. The pipeline capacity can become strained during severe cold snaps. Thus large users of natural gas such as hospitals, schools, colleges, etc may fire their boilers with fuel oil if the demand for gas warrants it. Natural gas is also used to produce ammonia for via the Haber Process. Ammonia is in turn used to as refrigerant, and more importantly nitrogen fertilizer. Pipeline capacity constraints make coal the best fuel to generate electricity for base load power plants. Since metallurgical coal is used to make steel, and we live in the Age of Steel. The war on coal is effectively a war on the modern world. Unfortunately, the war on coal is also a war on fossil fuels in general from people who do not have the slightest clue of how things work. Fossil fuels underpin everything in the modern world. I have seen some throw food on paintings chanting, Stop Oil. The tragic irony. It is oil and other fossil fuels that make it possible for farmers to grow, harvest, then the shipment of vast amounts of food fresh around the world. So much some can waste it on paintings.

Your forum about track ties is just what I needed the most. I like concrete ties, also called by some railroads in the world, "Slippers," because more concrete ties may be made than wooden ties. Wooden ties still have their places in the railroad. Concrete ties cannot be placed on every kind of railroad structure. In the interim, wooden ties and slippers have advantages and disadvantages. This show is the best one I have ever watched.
