Excellent shot here! That looks like a huge fish (do you know what kind?) caught and staring deep down its captor's throat! I can only imagine what the potential meal is thinking at this moment. 😧🐟😅 So the hungry Heron managed to win the struggle and gulped that whole prey down entirely okay?? The fish seems to be defensively flapping it’s tail about, if eaten, does the unlucky thing get swallowed alive all the way too?! It looks so big still, maybe this isn’t the last for the fish and it can somehow survive the encounter?
@Birds2njoy

The hair and often stabs the fish several times with its beak before he eats it so no, the fish does not survive becoming the next meal. And yes, this heron did eat the whole thing!

I grew up on a farm in Oregon. I used to see Northern Shrikes @5:03 every so often perched on fences; sometimes I would see their prey impaled on 1 of the barbs on a barb-wire fence. It's an interesting habit of theirs! They also use thorns for that purpose.

No- they migrate arriving back here in March. Although we did notice a stray or two that hung out all winter this year- not typical. Thank you
