With all going on, I moved rural a couple years ago. Am just getting around to the the communications here recently, lot to do on 20 acres. Normally this would have been my dad’s gig, he was a ham my entire life (pushin 60 now)… but lost him a little over a year ago now. Am struggling a bit with the tech, wish I’d paid more attention over the years…. I’ll get it. Would be helpful, like you said, to find a club. Will have to do some looking, again, fairly rural. When I originally purchased my Icom IC-27A/H 220Mhz transceiver in the 1980s, I really enjoyed 220Mhz. I'm looking at the manual which I downloaded and cannot seem to find information about setting a PL (Private Line) tone for a repeater. Is the terminology in the manual different? I see Burst Tone, Signal Code (S-Code). Now that I look harder I see it might be the T-CTCS (CTCSS) feature?

@@DandyDon1 that was my initial impression too, but ive tested mine with local hams and it does in face transmit, or at least my early model does. Did your come with two antennas? There's really no reason to send an antenna tuned to 220 if it only receives.

@DandyDon1 Ай бұрын
@@kobblekraftka0kao29 It did come with two antennas. Yes there would be no reason to send two antennas. It does seem to transmit on 220Mhz as it disrupts my computer loudspeakers, oi! I programmed a couple 220mhz repeaters which are supposedly very close to me, but could not open either one. On 2M, no problem. I've not tried 70cm yet. I've purchased an inexpensive Tinysa Spectrum Analyzer, AURSINC V0.3.1 Handheld Frequency Analyzer, Signal Generator 100kHz to 960MHz MF/HF/VHF UHF Input ESD Protected Function with 2.8 inch Touchscreen. This freq counter/spectrum analyzer cost almost twice as much as the K5 Plus transceiver. Technology, got to love it! :) I will admit the learning curve for programming from the manual is a bit steep (at first). Seems the included manual seems to be a very "generalized" version. No mention of it being exclusively for the K5 Plus. The only mention of the "M" version and the "L" version scanning of Police frequencies 350-390Mhz. On the baofengradio de website there is few more details. It's stated to be 5 to 10 watts output. BTW the regular Baofeng K5 Plus website is flagged to have spyware by Malwarebytes, but still viewable.

The band grouping on the antennas is kinda... Odd. Personally I would expect there to be less of a technical leap grouping 144/220 than 144/440. (Although it does make sense from an "off the shelf" standpoint). Regardless of 'how it's labeled', I would be interested to see if there's excessive power reflection on 2 meters from the 220 duck.

Right you are Steve! This antenna is so easy to setup and was very effective. This is a very simple antenna to build, i used a BNC splitter and two 14ga wires cut and tubed to 40m. I supsend the wires on fiberglass posts with clamp-on electric fence hangers. It all packs-up light and small. Our goal was to make local communications from less-than line of sight situations like valleys and canyons. It worked flawlessly for that. Easy contact to our second NVIS site, only 40mi away. Beyond that distance will obviously vary depending on conditions, but i did make contact with a fella in Ohio, 470+ miles away. Do you think it would be worth doing a short video showing the build?

Nice video. If the station who was not hearing you well is within about 30 miles he may be too far away for groundwave and too close to copy you NVIS. The other thing is that if he is NOT operating on an antenna that works well on NVIS he may not hear you either. NVIS works best is both station are using antennas propagate nearly 90 degrees straight up. If a station is on a vertical he won't likely hear NVIS signals. If one station has ther horizontal antenna more than a quarterwave above the ground it is not optimized for NVIS. Keep working it!

I mitigate this with a crossed dipole (AS2259/Gr military style ant), seems there was no full nvis saturation which means at that specific time and area, that specific frequency was not the best, might they could of gone to a lower frequency perhaps they would have signal saturation, though yes indeed the optimum would be both stations to have the same config. A good explanation of such a matter is in the USMC field ant manual. Unlike the amateur community the military mentality is superior in targeted comms and utilize better ant to fit the specific need of the specified time..... I hope that I'm being somewhat understandable 😊 73s

Indeed, however the military goes in ebbs and flows regarding HF. When I went to Desert Storm (1990-91) in the Army I was a Chaplain's Assistant but we operated Army MARS for phone patches and message traffic back to Germany. None of the commo units brought HF with them. They were all dependent on SAT comms and it was inconsistant at best. On HF MARS we were consistently running phone patches and message traffic back to Germany. My brigade commander asked me to get him comms to the Petagon, which I did easily using a V-Beam strung up with cammo poles. None of the commo people had a clue about HF and the Division Commo Officer tried to shut us down. Fortunately he was over ruled.

In fact i even caught a fella in Ohio (486mi from DBQ) while i was tuning up. Great day in all. And i definitely think you're right about the frequency, it seems quite sensitive to movements up and down the band, at least with my meager 20w radio.

The one-touch power key is pressing and holding the "8" key. This radio also supports one-touch NOAA weather by pressing and holding the "0" key. Some Baofeng models (but not this one) display the battery voltage while holding the "1" key. The way to find these is to press and briefly hold a keypad key. If the radio immediately speaks the number, there is no long-press function. If it only speaks when you release the key, it has a long-press function. Pressing and holding the "BAND" button (above "EIXT") initiates the frequency / tone detection of a nearby transmitting radio. In that mode, the "#" key cycles between UHF, VHF, 200 and 350 bands.
