When it comes to our addictions to coffee and caffeine, I am convinced that most addictions are people self-medicating some underlying condition. Why does Josh feel so compelled to drink so much caffeine but Chuck doesn't? It could be there is some kind of imbalance whether things like neurotransmitter deficiency or low blood sugar that he unconsciously is treating with the high caffeine consumption. Every abused drug has these types of benefits, although most abused drugs have negative side effects too. Take alcoholism. People might be unconsciously treating a GABA neurotransmitter deficiency, but the side effects of alcohol intoxication are well known. Of course, the affected person can't articulate that because they don't know what it's like to not have the deficiency. All they know is that drinking makes them feel better.
